About Ozma
I am redoing my landscape because previous owners planted things too close, randomly, and sometimes in the wrong place. Also, my DH took out most of the lawn. It's a large yard, and I'm a bit overwhelmed.
We started at the NW end of the yard by putting in a berm in what was left of the lawn. We left the lawn so it would seem to flow into the neighbor's yard and have a park-like feel. We wanted one area of our 1/3 acre lot to look done while we tear everything else up.
The bed in front of the living room picture window, which I call the Entry Garden. is level with the house. We plan to edge it with stacked stone walls that follow the flagstone walks from the house down to the curb. Until then I'm planting a few perenniels and filling in with annuals. I'm trying to create a modern, slightly Asian look here.
The SE end of the yard will eventually be our rose/fairy/cottage garden. We will be creating a large arbor next to the house on which I envision a wisteria vine.
The backyard has two main gardens. There's one outside the mother-in-law quarters that tends to be shady, which I call Grandma's Garden. I try to make it a colorful as possible so that my mother-in-law can enjoy it with her failing vision. The larger back garden is viewed from the dining room and kitchen. I think we want to create a woodland look here. There's a deck that runs nearly the length of the house, and a shed under the great cedar tree that we're covering with wood shingles to make it look like a tiny rustic cabin.
Although GG is my favorite gardening community, a few other favorite gardening sites that I like are:

What's up with my maple and my roses? The maple leaves shown in the picture above were still green when the other leaves fell off. Now they are turning red. I'm not complaining, I just don't understand. My roses budded, but never bloomed. I guess ...

Blue Skies & Job Interviews
Have you ever noticed how much bluer the sky looks in autumn? Thursday we had a cloudless day in Eugene, OR, and I was out in the yard puttering around. I kept looking at the sky, wondering why it looked so very azure. It might be the azimuth of t...
