The other day before we left for therapy, Hubby went out to gather any eggs that might have been laid. He doesn't like for them to stack up because they get pipped or cracked. All the hens want to use the same nest. They are sooo jealous. In one coop there are nine nest boxes, yet they will all use the same one and always want to use it at the same time even if there are eight other places that they can go. Anyway, instead of it being a black hen in the nest, there was a huge black snake coiled up in their favorite nesting box. He was six feet long and a little lumpy. He had already had his breakfast obviously. The funny thing is the chickens didn't make a peep, but when a limb fell yesterday and brushed the fence, they had a squawking fit. Go figure!
We got 4/10ths of an inch yesterday. That brings our total up for this month to 3 1/10ths. For June we had 3 2/10ths. I'm hoping that we'll get these thunder showers every chance that one rolls through. We are blessed.

Oh, no! A snake eating your eggs? That snake must go. I would like to keep chickens, but it isn't allowed where I live... |

Snakes in the hen house, that sounds like a good ole country song. It is a natural part of living on a farm in the country. And now about rain. We had a nice shower yesterday morning and a better one that just ended this morning. I've been praying steadily for weeks, so now I have to say a thank you prayer. We have been getting rain almost every night since Sunday. We are blessed. |

We have had rain everyday since the 4th. Is there anything you can do to keep snakes out of the coop? |

A friend of mine recently told me about a snake in their coop. Her husband had seen him crawling down the corner of the inside of the coop. He went to get his gun, came back, and shot the snake. When he went in to retrieve it, low and behold, another snake had, at the same time, been crawling horizontaly toward the snake coming down vertically. Unbeknownst to him,he had shot both snakes and killed them with one bullet! I doubt he or anyone else could do that again if they tried! |
