Battling the heat already

My new lawn-less front yard is already reacting to the hot direct sun in the afternoon. Everything recovers after a good deep watering but I am forever trying to conserve water use. I know that some plantings will not make it, even after 3 months of research. I also know that once some get established it will get better. My veggie garden is really unhappy in the sun. I wish I knew how screening material over it would work. Any one ever do that?

I'm guessing that you are talking about plants and not grass seed. Have you thought of a drip irrigation system? It uses far less water than a sprinkler, waters deeply, and waters only the plants you want it to. I installed them in my beds and I love them. |

sorry for the slow response, we are having tile installed in the whole house and it has set me back a peg or 2. I have an irrigation system that I want to change to drip but not sure how hard it would be. Did you do your own? what did you start with? I am not too concerned about the turf...although my neighbors are!!! |
