I have a decent sized tree stump measuring 2-1/2'across by 2' high. What type of plant put in the ground against it would grow well, up and on it without completely taking it over with minimal cutting back? Or would it be a good idea to chop out the center and fill it with dirt to plant something in there like a planter?

trudy	Jan 17, 2008 \| 5:31 PM PST My thoughts is to place a large container on top of it an plant what you want, but let the outter edge of the pot be something that would drape over an cover the stump. I don't know but by carving out the stump to make it into a planter you may have to consider drainage issues. Planting something next to it to take over the stump would probably take a good while plus you will probably be fighting the existing tree roots. Perhaps someone else will chime in that has done this b4. I know when I had some trees taken out at some property years ago I went with the containers on top an it worked well.

I grew Honey-suckle around the stump, With the help of old limbs, (I amy have just been hiding the dead branches!), I got the plant to cover the stump. The blooms looked and smelled great, and Honey-suckle stays green year round here in MS. When the stump rotted, I pulled it out. The idea is to be creative and not make a big job out of it. Kudzu
