The weather was gorgeous today here in Eastern Mass and I was at a couple of the local nurseries and farms checking out their latest offerings. I came across some Gardenias, and as it turns out, I found them awesome. The deep green leaves, snow white blossoms, so fragrant.....mmmmmmm.... (cue Wizard of Oz sound clip of "poppies.... poppies....") and I couldn't resist. Now if you've read my profile you'll know that I have certain rules (well not rules so much as guides to my garden) when choosing plants. One of them is: the plant has to, at least theoretically be able to, provide something besides just looking and/or smelling good. As far as I know, this plant breaks that rule, and now I have one more tender plant that will become an indoor roommate starting next fall for 6 months or so. I should post a pic of my living room before the weather gets nice enough to put all my pots outdoors. They're all gathered around the picture window in the living room like a bunch of homeless people crowded around a fire in a barrel, jockeying for more light.

ILUVWEEDS	Apr 20, 2008 \| 7:24 AM PST Hi Robert! I am from the same area and spent the gorgeous day in the back yard. We replaced the fencing that came down over the course of two really bad wind storms a few weeks back. Our day started very early (with the birds in fact-around 5ish). We journeyed out to the Home Depot to get the 2 dozen fence posts we needed - and Home Depot in my neighborhood does not carry fencing materials--oh well off to Lowes! We were able to get 9 posts which let us fix a portion of the ruin...Oh well I guess I will have have fence posts to ad to my Lowes shopping list fir next weeks adventure! We share a philosophy on gardening as I too like to have plants that "function" good thing they all let off some oxygen eh? I do begin the selection process on an esoteric level, but then need to support that by selecting based native plant properties (will is survive this crzy climate, drought, cold snap in sept?) and most importantly can the wildlife benefit from it being in my yard? I also do not use chemicals of any fashion as most of the plants here will either be eaten by us or the wildlife....My dining room is the lauch pad for all seedlings, the table and floors are covered with seedlings. Yesterday put them on the back deck to start hardening them off but back indoors last night. I also have a gardenia on my desk in my office. I bought that at Home Depot about 4 years ago. I have trained it into a topiary and talk to it every day and it is the sweetest smelling plant I have ever owned! Nice meeting you! Jo.
witt	Apr 20, 2008 \| 9:22 AM PST Good analogy about the plants in the house. I don't get any light in mine during the winter, so it's a hopeless cause! Love gardenias. That reminds me that I MUST fertilize mine. They almost didn't survive the Big Freeze last year.

Good analogy about the plants in the house. I don't get any light in mine during the winter, so it's a hopeless cause!
