Voila cucumbers and eggplants. Does everyone find the growth of eggplants to be agonizingly slow? They seem to fruit so much later than other chillies/tomatoes.. I think I'll have to buy the advanced plants at the nurseries in the future, because growing from seed is so slooow! We also have a short summer here so I tried starting them off indoors during late winter.. but had no success..
We've made plans to move to Sydney next year, so we'll have to learn about container gardening as we won't be able to afford living in a house. I've enjoyed trying out veggies in the ground but it will come to an end. We will definitely take the olives, pomegranate, citrus, mango and bonsai collection with us. I forgot to mention that I have some raspberries and red currants growing. Not ready to eat, but cute nonetheless. They will be left behind when we move as they will not thrive in Syd. I will also have to leave the apples, pear, almond & cherry behind.

I grew eggplants from seed last summer and they did take forever! I agree with you about getting the nursery plants next year. Fun that you are moving...you will get to plan a whole new garden! I always loved container gardening when I lived in an apartment :) |

Years ago, I grew egg plants in my garden, had about twenty plants. I was advised to buy them from a nursery and put then under glass in a cold frame until they were 10/12 inches tall before transplanting into the garden. They did very well, if I remember, about ten on each plant. I gave most away to my neighbors. It took forever ,because I had to tell people how to prepare them. Have a great day and happy gardening. Hi there! I'm reduced to "gardening" on my balcony too. Next Summer (after long delays in our new condo development) we will have a larger balcony that our present one. I still manage to entertain myself with three pretty hanging baskets and other pretty things here and there. I'll enjoy reading about your adventures with a somewhat miniature garden. Are you going to get much sun? Unfortunately our new place is positioned facing the North, so I am definitely going to be limited as to what I can plant. well it sounds like apartment living is still fulfilling! I will make sure that I move into an apartment that faces north (which seems to work in the lower hemisphere!) I'll follow the cold frame method next spring - thanks for the tips! :) |

I felt the same way last year. I started them from seed. It took a long time for them to even germinate. They eventually took of though with the heat of the summer. Please do keep in touch with us here on GG. We would miss you if you didn't. |
