Gardening in August
Aug 11, 2008 | 12:58 PM PST
Is so hard to garden in August in the south. Am still trying to root cuttings of some new flowers that I bought. Still wondering how I am going to over winter all these plants without a greenhouse. I guess cover them up in the pots with leaves or straw. Went to Callaway Gardens yesterday. Their garden was looking a little weepy also. But it is so beautiful in Spring, and early Summer. The azaleas are what makes Callaway Gardens. Trying to keep the weeds out of beds. Still getting some tomatoes, but plants look half dead. Gotta love gardening to do in this weather!!!!!!!!!!!!

WATER,WATER,WATER

Seems like all I do now is water, water, water. Haven't had hardly any rain this SummerSouthwest is in drought. Even when you water, you feel like it is not enough. Spent 3 hours this morning watering a few plants. Bought two new plants Saturday, but am hesitant to plant them now. The new coneflower colors. Gold and bright orange. When it is 95 to 100 you just hate to put these new plants through the trauma. Might wait a few weeks. Transplanted some red verbena in pots. Just bought first of summer and already getting some babies from it. Of course I put them in pots and in partial shade. Good gardening to everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is getting so hot here as the old saying goes (you can fry and egg on the sidewalk). But did get about 3 hours work of repotting and doing some cuttings. Crazy huh? Had two of the grandchildren to help for a while. They transplanted about 50 daylilies for me. They get paid and hopefully are learning about gardening. Maybe they will like it. 11 and 15, its hard to say at that age. Did a great job. Having to mist cutting and plants often. Man, is it hot here. No rain in sight, have to drag that old HOSE around. If you garden in JULY you must love it huh????????????

Trying to clean the garden a little. Deadhead and pull weeds after a couple of rains. Really needed rain, has been too dry in southeast Georgia. Can't wait til fall to start my fall planting. Always thinking ahead. Right now just trying to keep everything alive during heat. Still trying to root in water several plants. Some good results some not so good.

Have been gardening 40 years in southeast. Very hot and humid but it can be done with the right plants. Doing some water rooting instead of soil. Need suggestions on annabell hydrangeas.
