About marymary

Hi I'm Mary,

Well I love to garden, I grew up gardening and my mother and father gardened. ( I'm from a big family of nine kids, 5 girls and 4 boys.)  I grew up in Wisconsin.  I'm 48 now.  born in 1960.  My mom loved to plant tomatoes ...she would save all the empty gallon milk jugs and cut out an opening in the front and plant her seedlings in there and they could get pretty big before putting them outside. (They worked well because they had a handle of them.)   My mom has since pasted away and I really miss her.  I think of her often when I'm in the garden.  She liked to play in the dirt too I guess.

I now live in California with my husband John.  I have found a nice patch next to my house that I have been doctoring for 3 to 4 yrs now.  The ground was pretty much clay.  I have taken alot of it out and also brought in a truck load of mixed sand, amend, etc.  to mix in and make it drain well.  I also put hay down to keep the weeds down and then after the winter I rotertill it in.   I also used compost and manure.  I water my tomatoes with manure water.  Just like mom did.     My husband calls me farmer, doctor Mary!  I guess I'm always trying to heal everybody.

I have planted yellow cherry tomatoes, yellow pear shaped cherry tomatoes, of course sweet red cherry tomatoes, some Roma's, Early girl, and something else I can't remember.  I have Romaine lettuce up about 8 inches,  carrots and radishes just starting out.  All different kind of peppers, hot and mild.  I like to make seasoning that I use all the time in soups, sandwiches, salads, chicken, fish, etc.  I also have a variety of lettuces, two tamatios, spelling?.  Good for making salsa!  Oh and some green beans.  Last year I had quite a time with moles or somethng. I tried to grow artichokes and they killed all four of my plants little by little.  Oh my was I frustrated.  The last one that went even had little artichokes started on top.  We better change the subject.  Bad memories!  And I plated some zuchini, I have a little room left to plant, but not sure what I want to plant yet.  Living here in the San Juanquin Valley, it gets pretty hot in the summer so I'll be lucky to get some green beans.  Someone told me I should plant them in the fall, end of summer around here, so I will try that.  I also love to crochet, sew, crafts, wood works, gardening, cooking and canning.

Something is Eating my Lettuce!
I put down snail bait, yes there where some, but now it looks like something is chewing on my Romaine lettuce.  It looks like it's being chewed off.  I'm thinking of setting up my movie camera at night... or just covering them.  But I don't know if I...
