Anxious for spring!

Today 01/29/08 I am anxious for spring to arrive. It's so cold outside -4 degrees. I can only dream of gardening. I thought this would be something fun to do since I can't actually get outside for a few months yet.

After browsing through this forum I think I'm really going to enjoy being here. There seems to be a lot of people in the community that have al ot of gardening knowledge. Hopefully I'll be able to obtain some great gardening ideas from them. One of my friends, Tootsie just joined the forum, also. I'm looking forward to sharing gardening ideas with her, too! She has beautiful pots of flowers. I'm so impatient waiting for spring!! |

Welcome! We had a place in Dubuque IA up until last year - Massey Marina. Your weather is very similar to ours here in IL except you get hit with it first most times! Stay warm ... it's wicked out there now! Debbie in IL |

Today I am wondering what it takes to become a Master Gardener. I have friends that have recently been telling me I should become one. Does anyone have more information on becoming a "Master Gardener"? |

I wanted to save this email for ideas. Hi, There are many tropicals that would do well in your zone though you would probably have to winter over a few inside. Have you ever used Brugmansia? I have many, they root in water and grow like weeds, but they require a ton of water in extreme heat. I have finally moved mine to a more shaded area-heady evening fragrance. Palms do well in containers ( Trachycarpus fortunei-Windmill Palm is the hardiest) might stay outside all year with protection, just bring the pot closer to the house and wrap with bubble wrap & burlap. I have plumeria in containers-again, fantastic fragrance. I believe the Musa basjoo is hardy to zone 5 and my sweet friend (Mosaic2007) has a great growing strategy that has kept hers thriving for a few years and I am copying her! Castor beans are easy to grow and some stay around 3-4', others grow 15+ which lends a tropical flair in a flash-they love heat! As long as your dogs do not eat plants that is-castors and brugs are not pet friendly! If you haven't tried some of the above, add your touch and give them a go. ~Andrea |

This is a great day. My friends Beddow and Mary joined GG today. I am so glad they are here. This is going to be a lot of fun. I am also enjoying the new friends I am meeting at GG. Everyone seems so helpful. And they have so much knowledge. |

We are packing today. Getting ready to take off to some place warm, South Padre Island, Tx for a couple weeks. That should help us make it through the winter. We're excited! |

I am think planting time is just around the corner. At least I'm hopeful. It's been such a long cold winter. I did get out and cleaned up my flower beds on 04-05-08. So that much is done. I raked the front yard. I really need to get in the backyard and rake up all of the bark that blew around over the winter. It's a mess. I want to mow the yard to clean it up. |
