Row Covers Failed!

I went and peeked under the row covers this morning to see if they had any SVB damage as i had spotted damage on the pumpkin patch that volentered. They have alot less damage but still damage none the less! Im very disapointed that my best efforts to get some squash this year will most likely fail. I hate to be to negitive about it but i got a late freez and non of my plant are producing yet and most likely will need 2 or 3 more weeks before i get more then 1 fruit so i think SVB is going to win this fight. I will still try my best but my hopes are not up. If i have to spend money on pestiside then i have defeated my own pourpose of saving money and growing organic. at least the lettuce that volenterd under the row covers are very happy despite the heat. I guess there is a silver lining. I have 21 healthy tomatoe plants that look great despite the late restart i had I should have lots of tomatos for my salsa this year lord willing!

I painstakingly set up my row covers yesterday and the puppy tore it to shreads this morning! That puppy will not do it again i have hot pepper spray i sprayed it in. They dont even want to sniff it now! Ha! I win this round. Now to make him stop digging up my plants and retriving them for me. :-l

Hubby is making me crazy! I have told my husband i dont intend to plant anything you cant eat this year. Told him eveything needed to be productive or it had to go i would not be careing for useless plants in my yard. I dont water the grass, i dont water the tree(i hate that tree) and i only prune the Crape Mertyl cause they are impossiable to kill and they should at lest look nice if i have to have so manny of them! Then i told him if he didnt start his yard projects i would trade him for seeds or cutting that are usefull to me! He decided today was a great day too clean the patio, garage and organize tools! I guess he took me serious! At lest we will be ready for BBQ season! :) I think if he gets even half that stuff done i will make his favorite dinner! Gotta reward the kids good work!

Ok anybody who has ever lived in Oklahoma knows that the weather is VERY unpredictable. I have lived here all my life so i should have guessed if the 10 day forcast called for mild weather there would be a late frost to nip all my peppers. But i thought if i just covered them they would be ok. I was wrong the wind picked up last night ripped the cover off my peppers and niped almost all of the 21 peppers i had in the ground. 5 look like they might pull through. the rest are in need of replacing as the wind was high so it made our 38 degrees feel much colder to my poor peppers. They had only been in the ground 4 days:(. You cant keep a good dog down so i went out and got more peppers they are 1.38 for a 4 pack so im not out a ton but im still dissapointed as alot of work goes into them gong in the ground. Im trying to decide on a varity of watermelon to put in this year and once again Gave chose a eggplant to grow! He dosent like them and wont eat them ( none of us will) but yet its his favorite thing to grow i showed him everything they had and all he wanted was that darn EGGPLANT! Not peppers, tomatoes, onoins, carrots, chard, lettuce, cucumbers, melons, potatoes, or corn all he wanted was that eggplant or brussle sprouts (which we wont eat either) . At least this year he didnt plant squash all ovet my yard! Kids! I have decided that this WILL BE our best garden if i have to sleep out there to be sure it goes well!

Ok so for as long as i can remember i have been bringing home stray cats, dogs, turtles, deer, and injured birds. I know my mom called me Dr Dolittle my whole life. Yesterday i went to the store to pick up a couple items. When i was leaving the store i noticed a couple kids throwing rocks at a dog who was barking and cowering in fear. I stopped the kids and told them off as they were old enought to know better. Then i went and made friends with him he was wearing tags so i thought no problem i call the number and get him home in no time but no dice. The number was disconected and the vets office wasnt open till this morning. Long story short he is the dog of a deployed solider and was left with a rescue that was closed due to funding and simply got lost in the shuffle somehow as they dont know where he went when his rescue was closed. He is a 8 month old Great Dane and just HUGE his name is Ammo and i was able to get all of his records due to him needing a foster family. So i guess we have a new dog for awhile. Maybe forever or maybe till his master returns from afganistan. He knows lots of tricks and is super sweet and smart if i could break him of barking at odd noises he would be perfect. I even tought him to high five in a half hour. Wish me luck we dont usualy have cattle indoors!

Sissy is getting old almost 10. She was almost 8 when we got her and just wanted to spoil her fore the golden years of her life. But little did we know she is not spayed and every sneky neighbor dog still camps outside my gate every 6 monthes or so. So i called the vet to see if she could be spayed at this late date and her kidneys are just not up to it. If she get pregnant now it will most likely kill her she no spring chicken to be having a litter. So what to do? Doggy diapers have been the solution but if you look at her in them you will be able to tell its so beneath her dignity to wear them. Its only 3 weeks every 6 monthes but what a pain! She wont sit in the garden with me in them i can tell she dosent want the other daog s laughing at her lol.

Onions are in and soon i will have seedlings of lettuce comming up along with spinch. I bought my tomatoes already and they are hardening off.  I just love to dig in the dirt!  I dug up a huge section of my monkey grass cause it steped over the line and was in the yard. I got a ton of stawberries to put in and i plan to put in my peppers come april 1st then i will just have to pray the weather holds. Got a new rose bush.  Its a white long stem rose. Im digging out the pink vining roses as hubby HATES them . They bite even when your vary careful. its had a long life in that spot 25+ years but it has to go or hubby will boycot mowing. I cant wait to get out there and put in my  veggies!

I love this time of year! The season of peperation for the planting season. It bring me energy and everyday something new is trying to come up from last year. I saw leaves on my blackberry bush and the red twig dogwood or the "twigwood dogwood" as Gave calls it is getting its first leaves. Mint is already making its comeback and my onions and spring garlic are going in. Seedlings are comming up everywhere and life is renewing itself. Every spring  i am reminded why i work my fingers and back to the bone putting in my garden. I remember my mother teaching me about sowing a seed and reaping the harvest of my labor . About how life was so like that garden the more time you spend tending it the better off it goes. Pull weeds while ther small problems,  catching problems early,  learning from our mistakes, and most of all preperation for the season. As a child this seemed a huge and impossiable lesson but one im so thankful for. All of us kids were brought into the garden for this lesson growing up but only i really made good on my project that summer i had soo much corn that year it was too funny but it stuck with me and every year i am also renewed with spring. I suppose it take another gardener to understand the deep spritual bond i feel with the earth and all her life this time of year.

Last week i lost all my tomatoes to late blight i have tried to save 6 but one has not made it so far and im thinking one more may die before the end. I have lost 3 more squash plants to borers altho i have replanted and been reseeding so that i will have something in a few weeks. There production has been good overall. Now for the ups i cant belive how wonderful my cucumbers are doing as well as my peppers! I picked 2lb of jalapanos peppers yesterday and there were tons left when i was done. I picked 10lb of cucumbers a few days ago and there are tons on the tree i need tyo pick in a day or 2. I have a whole new plan for my garden next year. I already cleared the plan with hubby who was happy im planing on doing watermelon again next year as he just loved growing them even tho he did no work on them last year!. Well the heat has been bad but soon it will be time to start my fall plants outside i have 200 lettuce to put in and radishes and cabbages as well as a few broccoli.Well got to go daylight is burning!

Man my cucumber tree looks awsome! Im getting so many cucks its crazy! My tree is a sucess! I know it looked silly for a bit but now its just great.  I cant get the pic to post here but take a look in my pics and you can see its come a long way ans looks great!

I am so pleased with my garden this year! I have a ton of peppers and the plants all look so healty and my tomatoes look great! I have 30 or more tomatos on the vine already and lots more to come! Despite losing one zucchini plant to squash vine borer my plants are still producing and looking ok. I got my frist cucumber yesterday and will have more comming very soon. Eggplants still not great but they are hanging in there. Lettuce is at its end but i will be starting them over indoors so in august when it time for fall planting i will be ready with spinch and lettuce. Yesterday we had the first triple diget day of the year and many more to come so it looks like soon i will be watering my poor garden soon. Greenbeans still not proudicing but we havent had a day with less then 78% humidity in a month or more so im hopeing soon we will see some greenbeans. well got to get out there before it really heats up.

Sorry its all so rushed it was really about to pour on me. I cant figure out how to add pics to my blog wound love for some help with thats as i have some good pice of the veggies I took out and the stuff thats still growing away out there. I got 6 qt sized bags of lettuce out this morning and in a couple days will do it again now that the summer heat is here. Got my first  2  zucchinis this morning they look awsome! I bought a few at the store last week to grill and they didnt look half as good as mine do. Yea no more buying them i got plenty out in the veggie patch now! Yellow squash are a few days off too and green beans are being attacked so im looking for a soap or solution thats organic for the catipillers i got doing there naughty work on my poor greenbeans. I pulled the garlic and they are small cause i had no idea you were supposed to put them in in the fall. So now i guess i know it and will do it this fall. Still the garlic look good despite them all being around golfball sized. My husband says our house smells like a pizzariea. http://www.youtube.com/watch?

This is this weeks update of my garden. I have tried to get it posted for days now but been so busy. I was pleased that everything did well over the hot weekend and it rained the night before i took my video so all are doing great. Hope you enjoy the video and im going to get some pics as well for you guys who cant watch my videos.

Ok this year has been the best year for timely rain! I have had to water once since i put my plants in April 15th. Everytime  I say if it dont rain in a day or so i will have to water it RAINS! and a good soaking rain too. I know spring is going to be over soon and summer heat has already started to set in but so far i have been blessed with rain when i need it and a thriving garden. My 7 yellow squash and 7 zucchini have really loved the rains as the are really getting big now . Everyday i see more tomatos on the vine and the peppers look wonderful. I had my first bellpepper  out of my garden which means i wont have to go to the store for bell peppers any more this summer YEA! My green beans are over 7 feet tall and now putting on flowers they look wonderful. I will have the video up as soon as i have the time to upload it. My cucumbers all of a sudden shot up quite a bit over the weekend so i bet they are ready now to zoom up the tree i planted for them to climb. My eggplant is a bit sad right now and i think next year we may not plant it. I have wanted to try broccoli so i belive i will do that instead as jeremy really loves it. Note: plant twice as much greenbeans next yearand put tomatoes out on the fence. my onions are looking great as they are just a bit smaller then baseballs already. i have been giving them some compost tea from time to time and so far they like it. next year i will plant twice as many of those as well. Spinch all died will try again next year. Will do lettuce diferent next year and plant about a 3rd more as well. next year pay more attention to the type of marigolds i plant they are 2 feet tall now and i wanted the short type. wonder if i should pull them as they do shade the slower growing peppers a bit now. I will post my video and see if anyone else thinks i should pull them. well thats all for now folks.

I love gave spending so much time in the garden with me.
