I took a store bought Garlic broke off a clove and planted it. The questions I have are what's next ? How long does it take? And I did this a couple months ago in August, I am in Anaheim California where it doesn't really get cold in the winter. Help and sugestions please... Thank you

CarolineC	Oct 6, 2007 \| 10:39 PM PST I don't know about how the southern climate will affect it (I'm in the NE), but normally garlic takes about 9 months to grow into a full sized bulb. I have also read that the garlic you buy in the store will not grow as well as expensive cloves that you buy in a nursery. I don't know how much truth there is to that, it could just be a way to sell expensive garlic. ;) I am also planning on planting some garlic cloves that I bought in the grocery store this fall, and will be looking for the fully grown bulbs next summer. Also... plant it with the blunt side facing down and the tip facing up, and make sure that the cloves you plant haven't been nicked/damaged.

Nothing wrong with planting from the bulbs bought in the store. I have done it and they grew just fine. Take the cloves apart and plant. I tried elephant garlic one year and they rotted.
