I live in a zone 5 community. Due to recent construction, many sections of our condo landscaping were destroyed or maimed. It was time to replace many of them anyway. What I'm working on specifically right now is a long southern exposure, full sun on the south, with a stucco wall behind the bed, which is also bounded by sidewalk. Lots of heat in the summer, severe dry and cold in the winter, usually with a deep layer of snow to boot.
We have fallen in love with Santolina as a foundation planting in sandy soil. There is not a lot of water available to this area. We would use the green santolina as the background, with staggered sage, lavender, gray santolina, dwarf asters and iceplants and some variety of thyme to fill in and cover the ground. The space is about 120 feet long and 5 feet wide.
Can anyone advise me on the use of Santolina in this situation?
Does anyone have a different suggestion?
Thanks so much!
Karla
