This is my first blog, never done this before! Well, I just recently bought a house in Burleson, Texas. After being settled for a year, now I'm ready to start playing in my gardens. Let me tell ya, when I first moved into our house, the gardens were full of weeds. As I started cleaning, I found a small, lonely hosta and very neglected rose bush. Please excuse me, I know nothing of the names of most plants so just bare with me! So, this month I have cleaned the whole front yard bed out, cut bushes down & ready to PLAY!!! I'm new to all this & was not born with a green thumb like my mother. My mother introduced this site to me & truly love it! By the way, my mother is the famous...indianshadow46!! You could say I'm SO eager to figure out how to plant in the shade. My whole front yard is completely shaded with non bearing mulberry trees. I've downloaded the flowers I have so far, please excuse the bareness, I've just started. I'm trying to figure out what will grow here. I am SOOO very proud of my hosta, she's my pride & joy. She has tripled since we moved in & survived the winter! So, she's definately a fighter!!!
If anyone has tips or ideas on what to grow here in Zone 8 (I just figured this out!) please let me know..... I have complete shade................... sniff, sniff

The hosta is lovely. Complete shade, huh? Hostas, hydrangeas, coleus,caladium, impatients. I have had excellent luck with irises in the shade. Good Luck! Also, if it is dappled shade, some sunlovers will grow and be thankful for the shade. |

I'm in zone 8 and started like you are. It's fun and now my family thinks I like the yard better than the house..I do actually. My backyard is mostly shade and in the summer we will appreciate that..A friend helped me trim some trees and I have some sun now not much so I'll learn and share you are in the right place the people here are really cool. Lucky you! It took me 8 years to complete a shade garden; here in the foothills of the Sierra, we don't have much shade. Eight years sounds like a lot, but it isn't, when you are trying to beat Mother Nature; I finally have my shade garden and I love it; I have ferns and other things that love the shade. You sound like you're doing okay; I read some of your Mom's stuff and she really has a handle on gardening... |

Congratulations!!!! I also had a similar experience -- we moved into this home and had to pretty much tear everything OUT before starting anew -- and we have lots of shade too!! Different zone though... I wish I had some advice, but I'm not so good at it myself and like you -- I'm here learning too -- but it is so much fun!! |

Love that Hydrangea. Oh my Look at that BABY (Hosta) she is a beauty! Your thumb will get greener as time is spent in the dirt! LOL |
