I planted some Poppy seed I purchased at Walmart. Then this lady told me it is against the law to plant them. Does anyone know if this is true?

It would appear that this is an issue--I cant help wonder why they could be sold if it is against the law to grow them???? I have many poppies in my yard and just let them self sow--they're gloriuos!!! At any rate here are some excerpts fro Poppies.org..... Reprinted from the San Luis Obispo County NewTimes THE POPPY PARADOX Beware: Reading This Article Could Make You Into A Felon, But Not Reading It Could Get You Arrested They are grayish-black flecks, such weightless objects for their potential. Poppy seeds grow into beautiful flowers, taste good in muffins, and produce opium. It is this latter trait that got Tom Dunbar and Jo-D Harrison into so much trouble. Take the smallest pinch of poppy seeds, the exact same kind that top your bagel, and plant them. In a few days, they will sprout tiny white stems, then slender green leaves, and will keep growing into hardy annuals with vibrant flowers. A couple of months into the spring growing season, the flowers will fall away, leaving in their place round seedpods filled with thousands of seeds and a milky sap that will ooze out through any slits made in the pod walls. That dried sap is opium, an illegal narcotic even in its most natural form, possession of which can send you to prison. Opium is a highly addictive drug that can be smoked or eaten, inducing a dreamy high that can last a few hours, or it can be processed into morphine (an alkaloid found in opium that is its main psychoactive component), heroin, codeine, or other drugs. I've heard that, too, but I don't think that you'd be out there slitting the seed pod to be making opium. I think that it takes a lot anyway. I wouldn't fret the cops. |

I knew about poppies and opium. I am trying some poppies this year, too. I think mine are called California Poppies. |

Grow your poppies and enjoy them, when the flower dies, dead head it and you wont have the seed pods that everyone is so worried about. Much to do about nothing. You have a great day and happy gardening. Bill Mitchell |

Considering that the wonderful state of Virginia plants along it's highways, I wouldn't worry about growing it. Besides, I believe that most poppies DON'T produce opium, just that one variety. Why else can we have poppy seed on bagels, muffins, cakes, etc? |

When I was little, my grandmother used to cut into the sides of the poppy and hang them upside down and let the sap disappate; she was saving the seeds for the next year, by drying the seed heads. Maybe she was making opium, too, as, in those days, you generally prepared meds with what you had. Feverfew is not allowed to be used in the States, for medicinal purposes, but is used in England; the tea will get rid of a migrain headache in no time. I planted poppy seed in the back yard bed. Now Hubby is afraid the bassets will get into them. Well, I fenced it off since I want to see these beauties again. They are just sso colorful. Thanks for all the posts |

I love all poppies and it looks like it is fine to have them in your gardens as long as you are not going into opium as a side venture or to supplement your retirement. Just enjoy your plants. LB Legality In the United States, opium is listed as a Schedule II controlled substance by the Drug Enforcement Administration. In addition, "Opium poppy and poppy straw" are also prohibited.[3] However, this is not typically enforced for poppies grown or sold for ornamental or food purposes.[1][4][5] Opium poppy cultivation in the United Kingdom does not need a license, however, a license is required for those wishing to extract opium for medicinal products.[6] Last edited by yardgranny6 on May 3rd at 4:02 PM. |
