Family will be here today. We are expecting a beautiful day here in Texas. 74 degrees makes for a great egg hunt. I do hope my plants survive the scramble for that hidden egg...lol
My Mother past away in Feb. this year. She gave me a small redbud tree from her yard before she passed. It hasn't budded yet. I do hope it made it through the winter. But the Japanese Maple, she and I planted last summer while she was here on a visit, has leafed out. It is just beautiful. The Gerber Daisies are blooming too. I hope a little foot doesn't find them today during the egg hunt.
My iris are not blooming yet. Neighbors are in bloom. I thought they didn't need any extra care! These are the near black ones that I bought at the local nursery. They didn't bloom last year. Any advice on how to encourage the bloom would be much appreciated.
Neighborhood Tom Cat still in my formal courtyard garden. I put baking soda around everywhere to lessen the smell so our guests could enjoy the area for socializing with one another. I cannot catch that Tom, but when I do he is going to find another yard at another neighborhood. I hope, but the Humane Society will probably give him back to the neighbor along with a fine.

Have a wonderful day today. We will be with our son and famimly tomorrow. It is a great time of renewing, in our lives and our gardens. Linda B from SC PS: You might check with your nursery about the Iris. Could be it is a late bloomer, but sometimes it takes them a year or two to bloom after first planting. Happy Easter. Sprinkle some mothballs around your garden and this will repel the cat and will not harm your garden. Being outside, there isn't any noticeable odor from the mothballs as there is from the cat. You have a great day and happy gardening. Bill Mitchell |

Believe me, I love cats and dogs. I had a lebanese cat, similar to a siamese, named Nikki but a dog got the better of him. There are 2 neighbors' cats roaming in my backyard and leaving their smelly pooh. I tried everything to keep them away, cayenne pepper - lots and lots of them sprinkled all over, an electronic gadget with sensors guaranteed as it says on the ad (it did not work). What else can you do? It is really frustrating me as I cannot now have a cat because of my allergy. While pruning my roses, I cut some big stems with lots of thorns and lay them nicely on the cat's favorite spot. So far, I have not seen nor smell any of their leftovers. Knock on wood. I will try the mothballs if this won't work. Happy Easter to all and happy egg hunting. BTW, my bearded iris are not yet blooming too. Not even buds. How nice to have the maple to remind you of the time spent with your mother. No advice for the cat problem, I am going to try the mothball thing as well. I put bamboo skewers in my containers which keeps them from sleeping on top of the cushy plants. Easter Blessings to you~Andrea |
