April is the cruellest month, breeding/ Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing/ Memory and desire, stirring/ Dull roots with spring rain. Or something like that. What's the old maxim? "March is lovely, April's ugly"? I'm inclined to agree, although it is exciting to see everything returning to life. My Crocus survived my inept planting and rewarded me with about a half dozen blooms along the walk to the road. I posted a pic. I'm adding a border garden along the wall behind the carriage house -- I'm halfway done. The back edge will be a lining of really old bricks I found at the back of the house when I first moved in. I'm going to plant mostly peonies there, so that for three beautiful weeks in May it will be an ocean of peonies. I'm also going to try some Gladiolus, although I think it's a bit chilly by me for them. Other than that I'm cleaning out the other gardens, especially behind the dining room, and today I'll clean out (and expand) the far side of the brook garden. Also, my folks are bringing a Lenten Rose today, which will be the first contribution to the shade garden along the road side of the house. As a postscript, it looks like my Wisteria somehow managed to endure my bungled pruning -- hopefully it blooms.

How about "April showers bring May flowers", gets you through a much needed month of rain around here! Your peonies will be beautiful, my neighbor has a long bed of them that face my kitchen window-I soooooo enjoy them. Wisteria is one of the most hardy plants-not certain they ever die! I love April down here in Kentucky because it is like your May in New Jersey. It would be nice for you to post those great photos here in your blog for us to see. Here goes again. There is a way to do this and it is easy. Upload images to Garden Guides into your Photos album, click on the thumbnail and the larger image will appear then right click on the larger image and click on properties. A window will open with the HTML address there, make the window large enough to highlite the whole name http://cdn-media.gardenguides.com/media/images/000000/09/66/ MDk~NzY2_large.jpg Highlite it and Right click on it and click copy. Then when you are writing in the blog entry window, click the little icon at the top with a mountain and sun. That will open a window with a slot to paste what you copied from the properties window. Click on preview and you will see the picture you want in your blog. Then click OK and your picture is in your blog. That's all there is to it. Test it out and if it doesn't work, delete it and try again until you get it to work for you. You have a great day and happy gardening. Bill Mitchell |

Love lenten roses, but dont have any yet. Hope your wisteria blooms. It bloomed here at the end of last month. So beautiful. |

Make sure you click on the picture you want to post and make it large before you right click on it. |
