2/16-17 Moon signs say the next two and half days will be good for seed starters. Will be busy. This year will be more standard vegetable planting as landscaping will be this years work as well as remodeling phase 2.
Those who don't follow moon signs are missing valuable help from nature's celestial alignments. Ancient observers injected their belief ideologies in an attempt to explain what was occurring in their surroundings. And by these observations there has amassed a great wealth of knowledge in correlations between planet and moon alignment and plant life ( I know just one facet of the "religion" of astrology but a real as opposed to a conjured spell of vague prophesy which has diminished the value of the 'real' or 'natural' correlation with the solar system and in particular the moon).
Those who enjoy Ed Hume's seeds and his tv appearances as a straightforward reliable gardener can enjoy his moonbook plus his little old computer program is on his website humeseed.com. My parents learned early from ranching from their wiser kin and neighbors about the phases of the moon and when they came to the Pacific Northwest incorporated some of that knowledge as well as some of the older media garden writers who believed in it (Cecil Solly). So from early on simple experiments with plants proved over and over that within the moon phases doing garden work is significantly improved whether its planting or weeding or pruning. Its worthwhile reading up on this easily experimented ideas. There are many astrology books that offer moon phase guides and most are the same so we don't have a favorite and then there's the farmer almanacs. Well first entry is in and off to work I go preparing for tomorrow mornings starters.
Yesterday hauled 5 loads of compost from one 'hole' with our DR wagon and took apart another compost bin that has not been touched for two years and it is good dirt to play with. Noticed the garlic is up and crowns on rhubarb are peaking, the sorrel is 2" high and peonies are showing. The roses that I buried under juniper survived the cold snap and munched on broccoli that sprouted from a couple of old plants. Still have beets and carrots to harvest - been pulling them as we need, so its almost time to make spring borsht. Pulled the tires up we use to plant peppers in and found cutworms yesterday -not good -have to till that area and add compost. So many things to do and that’s just the veggies.
