a cellar cleaning coming up..
The grate in front of the entry door-was a large grate at the bottom of the cellar stairs when we moved in. Jim cut it in half, its a thick hard plastic-and I had a 2 ft. black basin I was using in the garden. I saw the set-up in a BHG issue quite awhile back & decided thats just the ticket to have in a mudroom when we built it.If you drop your keys etc.,no problem-just lift up the grate. It certainly does save the floor from tracking in alot of dirt-mud & snow.We hope in the near future the front porch is going to be demolished, and replaced,a slightly longer version. The dining room is lacking some crown moulding, the porch has the same pieces,so we will reuse it in there. All the old wainscotting from the porch we're taking down is being reused in the new bathroom.Sand-new paint, fill holes, labor intensive-but saving us alot of money. When I've got nothing else to think about-I muse about the next room and what it'll take. I got more bulbs in yesterday, they have multiplied a little-Purple Sensation Alliums, but I will probaly get another package as I'm crazy about them. The garlic is in finally, have a pile stacking up of plant containers-birdbaths to wash & put away.I walked by the tree bed,got side-tracked,and cut the flower stalks from the Foxglove, one thing led to another and before I knew it I was weeding the bed. I got it 1/2 done by dark-and I won't have a big mess in the spring. It needs more soil-and the Foxglove needs to be moved-which I've been saying that for 2 yrs.-so I might as well pick a spot & just do it. Yes- I've decided to put the Foxglove in front of the bamboo fence-then I can revamp the bed. Jim considers himself an amateur carpenter, was learning to make the trim cuts with the coping saw-he said he was having a hard time wrapping his mind around it,which took him awhile, but he did it. I primed all the trim in the garage,as it was misty out a good part of the day, and we got all the window trim up. I'll top coat that when I have a day alone to paint-probaly Thursday. The light is hooked back up-we can put the shelving-coat rack back up today. He got the metal edges done on the floor and insulated under the basin grate any rushes of cold air. He also cut the small pieces for the hemlock beams in the living room that were never finished-so I can stain them along with the next board going up. It didnt seem like much got done yesterday, but we had Landon,so that slows up work a bit,but the little stuff got done, and jim went out and played ball with him and rode around a bit-so it turned out ok all in all. Some days we push like ****,and some are more laid back. I went down cellar searching for stain{which I'll have to get some}to see that it was quite messy down there from the work being done over the last year. It looks like we've both got to spend a day down there snugging it up, and cleaning up all the work debris.Today we spend some time on the carport lattice walls, and I'll transplant more perennials.
