I am soooo loving my 2nd year with my veggie garden! Thanks to the wonderful world of internet, I have learned to blanch & freeze my first picking of greenbeans. In a few days I'll have a good gathering of Romano tomatoes of which I will create my own tomato paste & tomato sauce. My corn not only has tassles, but I now have little baby corncobs growing..I'm just so excited. My peach tree bore yet another bumper crop for the 2nd year, but unfortunately I waited too long to harvest & never got to eat a single piece of fruit! Darned junebugs!! I'm still not having much luck with my apple tree & I don't know why. Last year it produced about a dozen apples, but this year I only have 2! But on the upside...it's still alive!!!
On the flower front, I got a lot of "projects" completed this year with the help of my hubby, son, & adopted Italian son. Where once was a ridulously large front flower bed, now is a more doable bed with mums, hydrangea, some sort of pretty carnation-like compact bushes & even a small water feature. That big bed was the bane of my existence. For 7 years & waaay too much money, I agonized over what to do with the monstrocity. Thank goodness I don't have to go through that anymore! As I said, I planted yet another hydrangea & this one's actually growing & forming flower heads! I've had hydrangeas before but with no success. We cleaned out the bed beside the garage & now it looks gorgeous with daylilies, peonies, irises, a wild rose, & herbs along with some smooth river rock for accents. My Italian son scored me 5 large azaleas bushes for $7 each! Those are living happily in the newly created bed at the back of the garage. I still have one more bed on the end of the house that I need to do something with, but at least I've made progress in other areas. Now, if only I could get hubby to rid me of the persimmon trees, I'd be completely content. I hate persimmons to begin with & I did NOT plant them...they were already here when we bought the house.
I have 2 very large trees out front that I really should research cuz I have no idea what they are. I would also like to plant something beneath but everything I've tried just dies off before the end of summer. So, yet another challenge.
Well, time to go pick more greenbeans & check on my tomatoes. Yummmm!!
