GRRR Japanese beetles have arrived in our area. The last few years we keep adding more insects to those we already have to deal with! I am so upset with those critters. They are feasting on my roses!! The local nursery tells me there are no known predators here and that the only way to keep them off the roses is to use Liquid 7? Guess I will have to make a choice.. let them eat my roses to the branches or to use chemicals...

Ok- it depends on which way you want to go.Aquaint yourself with all the info here on google-know what their cycles are etc.,there's usually a 4 week frenzy here at our place,the good news is- they generally wont bother your veggie garden.They like anything ornamental or fruiting.Yes-there are products on the market-organic. We're using "Pharm Solutions",it does kill the beetles but you have to be consistent & follow the instructions for mixing.Its on the web. Milky spore the lawn-to kill the grubs,which will take about 2-3 yrs. and then last 20 plus.then there's the hanging bags.If nothings done at all they will continue to multiply and only get worse.My roses & pussy willow are the sacrificial plants-and get sprayed with the solution quite a bit.Right now the last of the stragglers are on the window box petunia's-which are starting to look a bit hagard.We will milky spore again late august-sept. dont always listen to nursery people-as they want to sell you their products., and many are not into organic-just simply educate yourself. Google "Saint Gabriel Labratories".

Cathy,the lady from the nursery does not sell any products.. she is organic and does nursery sales from her 7 huge greenhouses. She says she has tried lots of different things, but has never found anything organic that really helped so she and her just handpick too.
bsmitch	Jul 30, 2008 \| 5:59 AM PST A few years back, they were pretty bad. But they have subsided in the last couple of years. I had a few for a ten day period and I picked and crushed. Never tried frying em up. You have a great day and happy gardening. The Hillbilly
Aurora	Jul 30, 2008 \| 7:49 AM PST I am a hand-pick person. The bags just attract more. Just had a silly thought- why not try "screening in" your rose bushes? Those stupid beetles are too big to get through window screening! They're pretty much gone here- just a few here and there, for a while I was picking off about 100/day!!!!! My main victims are my wisterias, witchazel, crepe myrtles, and butterfly bush.
countrylane	Jul 30, 2008 \| 1:23 PM PST Last year, I had a large plastic cup that I would fill with hot, soapy water, then walk around in the morning and evening and swipe them into the water, where they died. Some even would fly in. This really reduced the population and gave me a chance to see the garden plants up close. Also try next year to plant some other aromatic plants around your roses, such as lavender and marigolds (the stinkier ones are better). Marigolds attracts the stinkers to them and they will leave your other plants alone. They work anywhere in the garden. Hope this helps. Have a great week.
