We have always liked to feed and watch the birds and have several varieites of birds in the neighborhood. After going to a garden club meeting and listening to the speaker tell about how to attract oreoles to our backyard. We decided to give it a whirl!! And yes... that beautiful bird has joined the other birds in our back yard feeders!! Yipee!!
Who knew that they liked grape jelly?? Surely no us LOL. But now we do and plan to continue to enjoy the orioles along with the cardinals, woodpeckers, doves, Eurasean Doves, sparrows, red finch, yellow finch, purple martans, Red winged blackbirds, bluejays, robins, and the other various speciies who visit our feeders. And I dont want to forget the hummers!! They showed up this week as well:)
Sure wish those birds would eat the bufflow gnats!! People here are having to go to extremes to protect their animals from those nasty buggers..Last year one of my friends lost 27 prize winning chickens to those things.:(

We purchased an oriole feeder at a feed and seed company locally. A jar of grape jelly is attached and is hanging up in a area away from other feeders. I did not have a lot of confidence in it.. but that jelly sure proved me wrong! I don't think I had ever seen an oriole before. They are really a beautiful bird! Chatty here's an interesting article about wearing appropriate clothing to avoid getting bitten by those pesky gnats. http://www.ext.nodak.edu/extnews/newsrelease/1998/052198/11b uffal.htm According to the article, you should wear a white shirt and dark trousers, and a light-colored hat too. Here's an article from a company that manufactures products to kill the little buggers. Including a hand held bug zapper. http://www.bugspray.com/article/gnats.html They have some other suggestions. Well isnt that grand. You have beautiful birds in your yard that you cant go out and enjoy because of the dang gnats! |

Thanks for the advice on buffalo gnats. I tell you they are nothing like regular gnats for sure! The best thing I have found to keep them from attacking.. and yes they DO ATTACK. As soon as you walk out the door, they are attracted to carbon monozide from your breath. And they bite and it hurts and does not heal quickly either. I and many other locals have tried all kinds of bug sprays and citronella is a joke! Everywhere here has sold out of VANILLA! There are no sprays, no lotions or hardly any bottles of the stuff on the shelves. That is what we put on the kids to go outside or to go do chores etc.. Until you have met a buffalo gnat you have not really met a gnat! LOL |
