Well, I was certainly hoping that last year would be the one and only time we would have to deal with those little buggers.. but NO.. this morning I went out early to prune my roses and get them looking good .. when a swarm of the nasty bugs surrounded my face and tried to go up my nose. I had to run.. well.. walk fast LOL into the house for protection.
I got to thinking about the remedy we had last year.. not foolproof by any means, but very helpful. I got out my vanilla and a cotton ball and dobbed it all over my face, neck arms and ears. Then I was able to complete my task.
In case you are not familiar with buffalo gnats, you can read up on last years blog. Or just do a google search.. they are awful!! They are drawn to a person or animals breath and swarm at your head the minute you walk out the door. Last year they lasted for weeks and we were unable to do much outdoors. They bite and send people to the hospital. They kill numerous animals by going up their nostrils. Mnay local people lost a lot of chickens and other pets due to the buffalo gnats.

Yuck, never heard of those before. Can you wear a mask to keep them away? Oh, never mind, I just saw that they bite too. Last edited by fairygarden on May 7th at 7:06 AM. |

OH MY GOSH!!! I was thinking the same thing -- about the mask -- like a surgical mack or something, but yes, the bites. Does regular over the counter bug repellant work for these guys?? |

A terrible problem with a lovely solution - if you like vanilla! Are they immune to Diatomaceous Earth? |

"Diatomaceous" I love that word. I think one could win a spelling bee with that one. I remember having to wait on some family members to come home one time in a rural area. I thought those bad natured bugs would eat us alive. Yikes! LB |

I practically took a bath in vanilla and still got bit!! My ear is still swelling as we speak!! Bug repellants do absolutely nothing as far as I can tell. Last year was the first time they had ever been around here and I was hoping that it was a one time problem.. guess not :( I am not sure about the d-earth stereoman.. would I have to wear it?
