I was wondering what varieties of tomatoes other people like to grow, especially if you live in zone 5? The reason I'm wondering is because I had two plants this year, a yellow plum and a beefsteak. Both are indeterminate and taste great, but I'm not getting nearly enough of either one.
This was my first year growing tomatoes. I bought the two that were on sale for $1.50 a couple of days before Memorial Day. I saw that there were a whole bunch of different varieties that day, on sale for $2. Maybe it would be worth spending an extra 50 cents per plant next year if I get a larger yield. I put this question in several places in the forums and only got one answer. Maybe I'll get more suggestions this way. What varieties would you pick and how many plants of each?

I grew Roma tomatoes and lets just say we have enough to feed an army! I grew these since they are good for salads and canning. I made ketchup last night and plan on making some sun dried tomatoes next weekend. I planted 8 tomato plants. Next year I probably will simmer it down to 5 or 6. Depending on what you would want them for, I would go the roma way. |

Thats a great question Bussete. I was wondering that myself just the other day. I planted one, and got 5 tom's but something ate them. I think I'll buy at least 5 next year. Romas and grape tomatoes. Keep us updated! |

I planted Bush Boy's this year. It was a variety that Lowes had. It has bee a great producer and has great flavor. We also did supersweet 100's and Big bush which is a cherry variety but size wise it is too big to use as a cherry--but the mnost tasty by far--I love to eat them right off the vine--while they are still warm! I plant a lot of tomatoes because I do canning. This year I planted 5 varieties: Sungold cherry tomatoes, Juliet plums (were supposed to be a grape variety, but a bit large)that I use to make spaghetti sauce, better boy slicing tomatoes, Bonny best - a salad and canning variety, and Jet star - another canning variety. The cherry tomatoes were the first to ripen, followed by the Juliets. They are all still producing, even though the two smaller varieties were supposed to be determinate ones. I don't remember how many plants total I planted, but I'm guessing around 20. I am in zone 5b/6a. Last edited by Twiggybet1 on August 25th at 9:29 PM. |
