I decided to redo one of my large circle flower beds, probably 12 to 14 foot across. This is the one my swing sits in. I had put decorative stone in it years ago and decided I didn't like working around the stones. So I removed most of the stones and reused them in other areas. Before I ever removed the stones I noticed this circle had a serious low spot so I began to hall dirt. When we put our garage up, my husband had them put the top soil in a pile originally thinking we would it in low spots in the yard, okay so this is a low spot. I have been shoveling it into my wheelbarrow and putting it in this circle. But at the end of the day I think...still needs more! This project isn't turning out so easy and not so quick, I guess that is usually what happens, isn't it!
I keep think about when ever you did a hole, say to plant a tree, it always takes more dirt than you took out.

The smell of lilacs is certainly among if not my favorite smell. There are Miss Kim lilac bushes planted outside the windows. These lilacs come on after the regular ones and they are so fragrant. My home smells just lovely. Visitors to my home these days seem to all remark on them, even my UPS delivery person was not immune to remark on their lovely smell.
It is raining and more rain is forecast for tomorrow so I fear it may bring an end as I see so many of the delicate petals are now on the ground. I guess perhaps it is partly because they do not last so long that they become so precious and appreciated.

I have been doing quite a bit to flower beds, maintenance that has needed done for a while. I worked full time and let things slip. I have planted a few flowers this year but I think the frost got some of my impatiens the night before last. My husband has always wanted a couple of tomatoes in pots so we can have tomatoes earlier and later than the garden since they can be moved in when it get cold. This year I took an old wheel barrow and planted lettuce, maybe we can still make a salad!
Many of my flower beds are circles or some portion of one. My largest one has a swing in it, but this year I realized it needed quite a bit of work. I removed a portion of the decorative rocks and began hauling dirt in, since over the years of pulling weeds and the like it has sunk down. From having a garage built we have a huge pile of dirt, so I have been getting the dirt from there. I am not sure what I plan to put back in but have no plans to put rocks back, I just found it to hard to work with plants and rocks.

We had to frost over the last couple of nights but in spite of that things have really started to green up. The leaves are coming out finally. The grass is growing. Not always sure that is welcomed news but it to must come with the rest. My lilacs have quite a few blossoms forming. And the fruit trees have blossomed.

I have chives that have invaded some areas of my flower beds, from many years ago my son had an herb garden. I have tried pulling them, using regular Round Up, Weed and Grow.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Finally we had some beautiful weather and I spent it working in my yard, mostly prep work, raking leavings, cleaning up beds and putting down mulch. It is looking good. I had to replace my pump for my pond but that is up and running. I have been redoing some areas. Now I have to wait for it to warm up to the point I feel safe putting plants in.
My crocus, hyacinths and daffodils have bloom, except for the first are still in bloom. I love the smell sitting in my back yard. My tulips are up but not bloomed yet.
Expecting rain tomorrow so I guess it is back to working on the stuff that makes our living!

For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of the singing of birds has come. Solomon 2:11
I do so look forward to the time when winter is past and spring has come. I want to be out in my flower beds and see things in bloom so much. I guess winter gives us a time to plan all the things we want to do for the next flower season. And I am planning so many things, I have a flower bed that I took out last year and never got it redone. Yes, I am definitely looking forward to seeing the flowers appear again!
4/18/08 Finally the flowers have appeared. So far it is crocus and hyacinths. But the tulips are coming as are so many others poking through the soil. I do rejoice! I have spent the last three days outside mostly removing leaves. I am always amazed at how quickly the weeds get growing! Tomorrow they are talking about rain but at least it isn't snow.
My pump quit working so I am hoping to get a new one purchased this weekend. I have been working on my pond though. Would like to do more with it, I guess I will be checking out ideas too!
4/19/08 Got a new pump but it is different so I am having to tweak with it a bit. Got mulch put down on my 3/4 circle flower bed, no plants to speak of put in yet but at least there are no weeds!
4/21/08 Worked on my walkway today, the cement walkway is over a hundred years old and isn't in as good of shape as I would like. Last year I covered the whole thing with mulch but took that out this year, just not the look I am after I guess. I made flower beds all around it, a couple of circles and a circle at the end. It use to be the walkway to the outhouse. lol
