About Yasaibatake
My love of gardening can be traced back to a single moment in the 1st grade. My best friend at the time, a girl named Kim, lived on the other side of a thin slice of woods, which had a creek running through it. The green strip was just wide enough that if you stood in the middle of the thickest spots, you couldn't see the houses all around you. We loved to see what plants were growing there and try to identify them with our little field guides. Often unable to do so - hey, we were in the first grade! - we would run back to her house, where her mom had a vegetable garden...those we knew we could identify! :) One summer day, we got to pull up carrots and eat them, straight out of the ground. I have been obsessed with vegetable gardens ever since, and, yes, carrots are one of my favorite things to grow!
I finally got to plant my own tiny veggie garden in high school (about 36 square feet), and it did okay, until it was taken over by some quicky growning strawberries. My folks left it as a strawberry patch when I went off to college, until the day it was accidentally mowed over, and now it's pretty much just a plot of weeds with an occasional surviving strawberry plant.
My gardening now is restricted to whatever I can fit/afford to fit on my one windowsill. Well, okay, so it's actually two windows long. The window faces slightly northeast (mostly north) and isn't a terrible place, but I miss having a real yard in which to work. I am looking at moving back home soon but my folks are moving so I'm stuck with windowsills anyways until they get the house sold and move into the new place.
Let's see....I mostly grow veggies and herbs, but I love flowers too! And I'm pretty sure that's more than you ever wanted to know about me and my gardening.
