Its only Febuary, but i think this is the most mild winter ive ever seen! We havn't gotten much more than 1/2 a ft of snow. its very odd. Im looking forward to my crocus, tulips, daffodils, and hyacinth this year which brings me to my problem.... this summer i had a big problem with squirrles. They dug up mu daffodils and tulips more than once, slicing them in half or thirds. I re-planted them, with hope they would grow anyway. Only the next day, another one was dug up again. I have problems with them all yr except for winter and rabbits bug me in the spring until the plants grow bigger. I began putting a gate of marigolds around, every year now because they grow fast and don't let the rabbits in. Now my problem is squirrels and my question is: Will my chopped up bulbs grow into a whole new plant? I just planted the tulips last yr and the daffodils the yr before that. I don't want to buy a whole new set! thanks!

I purchase large containers of cayenne pepper from ebay. I sprinkle it on my bulbs in fall, mid winter and again in early spring. It does a good job of controlling squirrels and other small animals.

That does work with the cayenne pepper and will keep dogs and cats a bit out of the way too. However, I think some of these squirrels of mine are getting to like the southwestern flavor. Maybe it keeps them warm? ;) There were some photos on the forum where some put down things around the bulbs like mesh wire, iron grids, etc. I'm thinking about those darn sweetgum balls coming to our rescue?? food for thought Good Luck!
