As I watch my seeds slowly germinate and cotyledons spread themselves out to the sun I cannot help but think "we made it". Growing up I always thought fall was my favorite season - I love the colors, smells, pumpkins, etc. But, now as a gardener I am in enamored by spring and all the promise it brings.
I was worried with the aftermath of late season snowfall. I know my tulips will pull through and the daffodils will hold their own. This is our first time growing garlic and I have waited all winter in anticipation of their growth. About 3 weeks ago we began to see sprouting through the straw - my husband and I trekked out daily to admire our handy work, our "babies" (yes, we are dorks:)). The first hint of a brewing snowstorm I snuggled more straw around the beautiful green tops and crossed my fingers. I hope they will be ok - they seem to still have life in them.
My seedlings sit on a windowsill looking overlooking the veggie garden. They lean toward the window almost asking to join their fellow plants. Tonight they will be moved to bigger pots and put under lights - I cannot wait for the familiar feeling of dirt under my nails.
It just amazes me the beauty you can create with water, dirt and a seed.
Here's to making it to spring!
