I need some help with a mistake I made. I fertilized my roses when they should have started hibernating. Is there anything I can do or have i just killed my roses?

You have not killed your roses. Just water them a little more than usual. This will help leach out some of the fertilzer., Roses can take alot of cold, so you probaley have a few more weeks of flowers.JUst cover them at night.This will use up some of the fertilzer. I have had them blooming into late November.I never cut back my roses till spring. If we have a open winter They don't need as much pruning . After your big freeze, put alot of leaves or shedded bark around the base of your roses. This will keep them froze. It is the constant warm and cold weather called heaving that hurts are plants. Up here we can have 60 degree weather in January, and the poor plants think it is spring. Alot of mulch will keep the ground frozen,If we would get the snow we should this would not be such a problem, the mulch helps. Next spring don't add any fertilize. I use only rabbit food... "Alfalfa Pellets". Fifty pound bag $7!!! It is the only fertlizer I use on my plants including grass.I Toss hand fulls around the beds... alittle more at the base of my roses Happy Planting. Kerry |
