Haven't been on GG for a week and a half till yesterday. My computer caught a nasty little worm that hijacked my entire operating system! GRRRR!! Computer went back in the shop and is up and running nicely now.
As for my excitement, I have all kinds of seeds sprouting everywhere!!! YAAAAH! I have tons of bellflowers, petunias, cleome, drumsticks, and sweet williams growing. Unfortunately, my lavender and aquelegia aren't doing a thing. I will give them a little more time. In the meantime, to celebrate all my new seed sproutings guess what I did today?! That's right! I went out and purchased several more packs of seeds! LOL! This time, I bought things that can be sowed directly into the ground in a week or two. Because of our warm climate here, I think it's about time to get started with those.
I am especially proud because I didn't use all those fancy smancy seed starter kits, I just cut the bottom out of two liter coke bottles and plopped my seeds down in there in some potting soil!!! Just goes to prove that you don't have to spend a fortune to have a lovely garden. Most everything I have now in my yard is hand-me-downs from my mother, except for some bulbs I purchased and seeds I started on my own.
I had some more good news the other day when I raked the leaves away to uncover my hosta from last year growing away!! I thought last year's drought had slaughtered them all. They all had turned brown and shriveled away. I told my mother there was no way they survived and she convinced me to check again. To my surprise, there they were with lots of babies sprouting up everywhere! Yee-haw! Think I am going to move them to a shadier spot this year just to be cautious. Maybe in a couple of more years they would have spread enough to make a nice little hedge along my driveway.
I got my rose of sharon hedge and my butterfly bush I ordered planted this last week. I'm really anxious to see what they do this year and what colors the rose of sharon will turn out to be. I hope I didn't plant two of the same color next to each other.....I discovered when planting them just how long and large tree roots can grow under the ground!! It was like a crazy maze trying to find a spot to plant them! I guess that's what happens when you live in a forest like I do! Hope I didn't damage the trees.......
I'm fixin' to start my one and only veggie for this year...... that's right, maters!! Can't do without a good ol mater and cheese sandwich this summer! I think I'll let the kids grow those as a project. Maybe it will encourage them to eat them if they grow them themselves. As the kids have been helping in the yard I've discovered all my son likes to do is destroy ant hills!! I swear, he is on a mission or something to rid the mountainside of all the ants! Good luck to him! He's all boy I'll tell ya!
Great to be back! Ya'll come back now, ya'll hear?!

It's a shame you don't live around me here in Jabez, Ky. I debugged a neighbor's computer yesterday and I'm doing another one in a little while. I work for free. That is just a hobby, but I charge for garden advise. Do you believe that? Just kidding. It's great to read about children helping in the garden. All seven of mine worked in our vegetable garden when they were at home years ago. It is a love that stays with them all their life.
You have a great day and happy gardening. Bill Mitchell

You had 7 children Bill and I get teased for only 4?! Today the normal sized family has 1 or 2 kids. I was raised in a family of 4 kids so it doesn't bother me. I am a little scatter brained though! LOL! I too was made to work in the veggie garden as a kid. My parents motto was "If you eat, you work!" To this day, I don't care much about raising veggies, only eating em! I am glad though for the experience and knowledge I gained by doing so. Someday I will get over my pouting and decide to raise a veggie garden. For now, I just bum veggies from my mom!! She still has a garden large enough for an army even with no youngins at home! It's funny, but my kids love to help her in the garden! They absolutely have a blast helping her! Guess that's the difference in being made to do something and volunteering! Sure could have used your help with my computer. I had to go back to the office and work for a week! That stunk! I also had to work all day Easter Sunday and didn't get to spend it with my kids b/c it was the end of a pay period and I lost a lot of work on my computer. I felt really sad not getting to watch them hunt eggs for the 1st time and I know they missed me too.
Indian Shadow, I don't know much about the tree rose of sharons so if you have any advice I'd really appreciate it. I really don't know what I'm getting into with them. My mom has one in her yard and it is beautiful. She calls it her "whippin bush" b/c her mother always made them go break a switch off of the rose of sharon when they were in trouble! LOL! I don't think my kids are too happy that I planted 6
