Wow, I've been away for ages! Hope someone missed me?!
The garden seems to almost be taking care of itself right now, almost....
The romaine is growing nicely, green and healthy, leaves are getting big. The oak leaf lettuce is so much stronger now, but not growing that quickly, I'm thinking to start my 'cut and come again' regime.
I had bought some spinach, simply because I was facinated by the thickness of the stems and leaves. They're growing well too. Really chunky looking.
Some of the corn's is almost ready to harvest and the two tomato plants I planted out (red pear, golden sunrise) are growing quickly.
Speaking of growing quickly, my once innocent looking verigated leafed pumpkin 'seedling' now envokes feelings I used to have when I first saw the movie 'The Day of the Triffid'! I had some idea that pumpkins grow rapidly, my husband warned me about it 'taking over' the whole bed, but I don't think I really believed him. Quite frankly, I'm not sure what to do with it, pinch it off? I've let some of it grow up a trellis, I've scooped up straying vines from the pathway, I've let it loop back next to itself, I've sacrifice some eggplants and I am currently just watching in amazement as it hurriedly creeps past my 'potato experiment' with my tomato plants in its greedy sight. I must admit I'm completely mesmorized by this never-before-grown plant. I'm also wondering when it will flower? But maybe I shouldn't think about that for the moment, I'll deal with that when it happens!
Here's a quick head count of what's now in my herb bed: Purple Basil (with the prettiest purple flowers!), Thyme, Dill, Coriander, Garlic Chives, Fennel, Sage, Chives, marjoram, Lemon Grass, Flat Leaf Parsley and peppermint.
I bought some carrot seedlings, though I'm not sure why, but they're still alive.
The asters are flowering in pots, I put them out in the back, the flowers are PURPLE! When I first saw them I was so thrilled, I've never grown flowers before. The mums are flowering too, white.
I've been harvesting so many hot peppers that I've given most of them away at church. There's only so many hot peppers that you can cook with! I had to slice the sweet peppers and freeze them for pizza and stir frying.
I still have beets to pickle, the harvest was good!
I'm hardening off (getting them used to the heat!) a couple more tomato varieties. (gardener's delight, tigerella) my beefsteak died.
So that's what's going on in my garden.
