If you can't beat 'em... distract 'em!!
Every night the squirrels, rabbits, and chipmunks are feasting in my yard. I've got a lysterine/murphy's oil soap/powdered pepper mix ready to use if this doesn't start to work. Perhaps with the new "snack stations" I made they'll have enough to keep them happy without using the repellant -- but if not, I'll try using both.
At any rate -- I wondered what I should use and I asked my husband if he thought he could make something -- he said he could but suggested using the water/drain trays from some pots first. I thought that was a great idea, so I picked 2 of them up today and set them just off the ground with some of the extra rocks I had.
I filled them with some sunflower seeds, corn kernals, and peanuts. I might consider adding a few other items to the mix if they start to use their new buffets. Here they are:

I would set them on the ground if I was going to use this method. It looks like it is setup for a dog or cat. You have a great day and happy gardening. Bill Mitchell |

If you'll check the bird feeders in my photo section, you'll see that ground wire does the trick; the squirels can get the black oil seed, but the birds get the lion's share; works well. I'll take more pix of our feeders; not pretty, but wonderful to get enough food to everyone. |

Hi Mitch :) Its actually only up about 2 inches off the ground :) I already caught one squirrel feasting!! :) The BlueJays did seem to hog all of the peatnuts to themselves within about 1-2 hours of them being out there though... but the squirrels seemed to like the corn :) MotherBored -- I'm going to take a look at your set up and see what you have going :) |

Don't see why it wouldn't work! I have plenty of squirrels and they leave my plants alone because they have a wonderful feast of acorns |

Just a thought ..if you feed them won't more come? Or another rodent/animal? |

I'm not feeding these city squirrels around here. Right now they are busy making and caring for new additions to their families. The babies sound so much like kittens mewing, it took me a season to figure out it was baby squirrels. But watch out when the toddlers come out of those nests I see in the pine trees. They are a hoot to watch and I have bird feeders they can't get into, thank goodness. Linda B |

Ohhh... I don't think it would attract anymore than we already have -- this is a really rural area -- the trick is just keeping them off the things I don't want them to eat. :) |
