Crows

I've had this hate relationship with crows for years. They're loud, they break the leaders off the fir trees, eat my fruit and have drunken brawls all night long in the nearby trees. Last year they didn't show up - maybe it was West Nile, I don't know the reason, but I was happy. This was heaven. The buzzards starting coming back and several families of red-tailed hawks moved in. Then the hawks started to use my chickens as a food source. This was not the bliss I had wanted. I did some reading and found that crows do protect chickens because they are so territorial and will drive out other predatory birds. Now I'm out spreading corn around tyring to convince the crows to come back. You really do have to watch what you wish for.

We have crow issues here as well as I live on the edge of town with large areas of bush and trails and last summer they were everywhere and so loud even at night they will get into the trash as it sits out waiting for pickup.Thankfully there seemsto be far less of them this year I am not a big fan of them at all! |

I've been reading a lot about bird problems on every other blog here lately. I do sympathize with everyone and I try to be understanding, but we have every type of those birds in our area but there seems to be a central balance here in this part of Kentucky. This must be the ideal place to live, because we all get along, man, beast and bird. Come on down. Y'all have a great day and happy gardening. Bill Mitchell |

How ironic - my son who is home for spring break & actually just joined GG had a brief conversation with me yesterday. He mentioned how he doesn't see Crows anymore like he used to & that they are dying off. I hope he reads the blog & adds his infinite knowledge & helps us understand a bit. I can say that as I was growing up I NEVER saw crows - just blackbirds & when I moved further out west, I thought Gosh, these blackbirds are Huge out here! Maybe they go through a cycle of some sort? I think I read somewhere that Crows are mainly in the West and Blackbirds stick more to the East. I remember in Iowa there were a lot of red-winged blackbirds, but don't remember many crows or regular blackbirds, but then, that was another life, long ago. |

trust me there is no shortage of crows they fill up my trees once in a while but only stay a little while just enough to rattle my nerves |

crows are alive and doing quite well here in southwestern Ontario Canada:-) |
