Each Jan I think that I've just about had it with my orchid cactus (Ephiphyllums). They take a lot of room, don't do much most of the year and are just an eyesore. Then they start blooming in the spring and I relent, letting them live for another year. Well, this year I'm going to be tough and toss out most of them. But I was able to enjoy their blooms for another year. Too bad they're so fleeting.

On our last visit to Hawaii we stopped by a wholesale Nepenthes nursery located on the volcano. The owner was very nice to us and gave us a tour of his wonderful collection. As shown here he has found a use for those old giant satellite dishes -

He also sold us a couple plants and shipped them to us - pictures below. You meet the nicest people at nurseries.

I've had this hate relationship with crows for years. They're loud, they break the leaders off the fir trees, eat my fruit and have drunken brawls all night long in the nearby trees. Last year they didn't show up - maybe it was West Nile, I don't know the reason, but I was happy. This was heaven. The buzzards starting coming back and several families of red-tailed hawks moved in. Then the hawks started to use my chickens as a food source. This was not the bliss I had wanted. I did some reading and found that crows do protect chickens because they are so territorial and will drive out other predatory birds. Now I'm out spreading corn around tyring to convince the crows to come back. You really do have to watch what you wish for.

I bought a Tillandsia several years ago. I put it on a piece of wire and it started to multiply. Each year the ball gets bigger and bigger to where it's now about 3 feet in diameter. Recently I've noticed some kind of a hull breach occurring - probably due to the weight of the thing. I thought that maybe I should get some netting or something to wrap around it to hold it together, but that might interferre with it's growth. Maybe it's nature's way of telling me he wants to divide and colonize.

I have a sickness. I buy lilies whenever I see them. I thought I was finished after I bought a bunch at the garden show but when I went to the grocery store today there they were. Ugly looking things, 4 inch white sprouts on them - terrible shape. I had to buy them anyway, as I said, I have a sickeness.
