Pepper Blunders
May 25, 2007 | 4:55 PM PST
The first Pepper Blunder of the year is that I started my seeds out late. I know that they take a long time to germinate, I just didn't pay close enough attention to the calendar. I got some of the seeds to germinate and I bought some colored sweet bell peppers from the store. The only pepper that would be in the HOT category that was purchased from the store was a 'Tam Mild Jalepeno. I like the flavor but not too much heat. The next blunder of this season would be that I neglected to add the newspaper and mulch around the plants. This is actually visible in the photo of the Brandywine tomato. I had begun to refer to that area as the grassy knoll. My most recent blunder came last week when I was cleaning up after blunder #2.....weeding the pepper patch. All of the pepper plants were clearly visible. I looked at the plant closest to me and said to myself, "I should be careful not to catch that plant in my fingers as I pull out these weeds". Then what do I do not 1 or 2 minutes later? You guessed it. I pulled that poor baby right out by the roots!!!! I STARTED THAT BABY FROM SEED!!!! Of course I was mortified. Part of the main root was snapped off. I decided to try to save it, so I put it in some water that had fish fertilizer in it. It perked up and I was able to pot it back up. Despite my crazy mistakes my abused pepper baby is doing quite well and I will transplant it back outside sometime in the next week. Needless to say I was much more careful as I worked my way through the rest of the bed. Hopefully I will learn from all of my mistakes. LOL at myself. Gardening is most certainly a journey worth taking.
