I have a bed of thornless blackberries and when I planted them I mulched it like crazy. I did this every year for awhile and it kept the weeds down for the first 2 years. Now I've got tons of weeds, maybe because I got too busy to mulch it last fall. I use leaves and grass clippings from friends and neighbors. Anyway, I tried spot spraying the weeds and ended up killing some plants. Does anyone have any ideas? I thought about laying down plastic and putting bark on top, but don't the plants need to send up runners? If not, the plastic would work for me.

bsmitch	Jul 23, 2008 \| 10:19 AM PST From what I've been told the roots send up new starts this year that will bear next year. It only bears fruit on the two year wood. After it produces then you need to prune the bearing wood back to the ground and leave the new growth for next years production. If you make a mistake, you might not get berries. I would aggressively pull or dig the weeds manually. You have a great day and happy gardening. Bill Mitchell
Deesi	Jul 23, 2008 \| 3:14 PM PST I got my thornless blackberries two years ago...and the lady I got them from said the berries that dropped would seed...and that they have...sha-zamm! I do check on a regular basis and pull weeds...and now that I have been reminded...I need to go feed my face! With blackberries! Happy Trails! Dee
