I have a bed of thornless blackberries and when I planted them I mulched it like crazy. I did this every year for awhile and it kept the weeds down for the first 2 years. Now I've got tons of weeds, maybe because I got too busy to mulch it last fall. I use leaves and grass clippings from friends and neighbors. Anyway, I tried spot spraying the weeds and ended up killing some plants. Does anyone have any ideas? I thought about laying down plastic and putting bark on top, but don't the plants need to send up runners? If not, the plastic would work for me.

We finally got a nice day, lots of sun and a balmy 50 degrees. I looked at our forcast and starting tomorrow the temp drops again and it's supposed to snow. That's the forecast for the next 5 days. I could scream but it won't do any good. I worked on my fish pond and got the planters on my porch rail ready just incase we actually do get a summer this year. You know when you look at a project and you get it all figgured out in your head and think " this will be easy" ? Should know better by now. Several trips to the nursery to get connectors for setting up a soaker hose and they're still the wrong kind or size. Hook it all up, turn on the water and watch it spray out from the fitting. Same with the pond. Clean it, clean the pumps. Set up the little fish that spits and stand back to watch it for a few seconds before it stops completely and the pump is deader than a doornail. Now I remember why summers are so busy. Projects always take much longer than expected. Do I sound grumpy? Funny, I was fine till I checked the weather forecast ! Alanna

Is it just me or is this a long cold winter for almost everyone? I live in Idaho but I'm reading about the cold and snow from several states. My daughter lives near London and she sent me pictures last week of snow at thier place. It's not unusual for where I live but it seems to be all over. I can't wait till summer comes! Alanna

Check out the latest pictures in my album. My Snow Roses have finally bloomed. I've been waiting since Dec. for them to flower. They always flower in winter but I never know when. They are beautiful this year.
Funny how they decided to come on April Fools day. :)

It's cold outside and still snows on and off. I can't do anything outside yet so I decided to go online and look up gardening sites. This is the time for dreaming of sunny days and working in the garden. I found this site and was very impressed. What fun. We have nice warm summers here, but they are short, so we have to start plants indoors and wait until August to eat our first fresh tomatoes. It's a bummer sometimes, but we love it here. It's a beautiful area. I live in the high prarie. Mountains just above us and rivers below us.
