Mine was about as big as judomis is in that pic when I started it. The hard part was getting the foliage through without breaking it off. Mine is very strong now and bigger...but the ones in my garden are 5x the size of the one in the bucket.
Mine is still growing up towards the sun and has gotten a couple of flowers on it.
It's neat to say I tried it, but I don't think I'll do it again.

Facinating! Gotta try this next year. I'm so desperate for tomatoes to grow, that I've planted 2 plants by the front steps! (I put in some phlox and some marigolds to soften the look of veggies at the entrance...

I agree with DeeAnna, the upsidedown tomato plant does seem to grow a lot slower. Mine also has a few flowers on it, whereas my other tomato plants have small tomatoes on them. The bucket was an experiment, just to see if I could do it. If it's very successful, I might decide to do it again next year.

I checked the plant today. It's definitely alive. It has more new leaves and two more flowers. Since I'm not exactly a patient person, I turned the plant back upside down today, and placed it in a new spot. Hopefully the new spot is less windy. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

My upsidedown Roma is not doing well at all. I think the problem is that I covered the top of the pot over with 4 layers of newspaper as mulch and it ended up keeping the plant too wet. Oh well, I'll let it do what it's going to do and be glad that I put the other 2 in patio pots! Next year I'll do better LOL

I kept my seedling in a 3 inch container until it was well rooted. Then I transplanted it.

Just thought that I would post an update on my upsidedown tomato plant.
Although it had a very rocky start, the main stem broke and I stuck it back in the soil......the stem rooted and it's growing very well. It now has little tomatoes on it.
