Well, I look for flavor, adaptability to my area, heirloom/unusual, and bug and disease resistant (the last generally applies to tomatoes). In that order.

Hope that helps.

Oh, yeah, a really cool online shopping cart and fast shipping are factors too.

When shopping for seeds(mostly veggies and herbs) I try to be conservative. By that I mean I have lots of time in the Minnesota winter to select a huge amount of cultivars and confuse myself . I receive roughly 20 catalogs from many fine seed companies and the Seed Savers Exchange membership selections. For example my initial list for tomatoes for 2005 included roughly 50 varieties, which was ultimately reduced down to 15. Chiles included about 20...down to 7.

I'm far from wealthy, but most seeds, even rare heirloom varieties are not incredibly expensive in my opinion. Would gladly pay $3.25 for a packet of 15 Japanese Black Trifele tomato seeds rather than an extra gallon of diesel fuel at $2.37. I will be saving seeds for only the second time( a newbie here) and will take much satisfaction in that.

Ultimately I suppose I choose quality, mission statement and rare cultivars over quantity and price. Then again it's not like I'm growing 5 acres of heirlooms, so I believe its money well spent. I trade my tomato seedlings for many unusual herb selections straight up...one plant for one plant with a local, like minded herb grower.

Im not consistant with what I do; sometimes I will by a seed cause it is cheep, and sometines Ill buy the top of the line.I will buy a 4 pac if I cant find the seed locally or I need back up *lol (case the squirrels get to it and to give away) . And once in a while Ill buy online for good quality seed.I bought all my perennial seeds that really matter to me online, others were cheep 3 for $1 and if they ever germinate I will be amazed*LOL
Then again I bought what I thought was "just a mini green house" from the Dollar Store and there were "no name" tom seed in there and I had over 75 plants from it !
I looked to buy it again the following yrs .. they never got them in again
I was going to buy strictly Organic but was not convinced as of yet that
1, they are and 2 that it really made a difference in the fruitand 3 the price was more then doubled(which I may pay anyway for a few if convinced they were worth it).
I also save quite a bit of my seeds or get them fresh from the veggie I just ate, either store bought or my home grown from seed or grown from someone else (friend) and tasted great. Some herb plant I share/swap with friends whether home grown by (them) or bought.

I enjoy doing most of my veggies from seed .
Which is about 22 different veggies ,various companies and varieties.

Beets carrots celery kale collards cucumbers lettuce toms peppers squash pumpkin butternut squash watermelon cantaloupe stringbeans peas turnip mustard greens brocc. cauliflower kohrobi corn and various herbs (I bought flowering Kale and flowering
cauliflower for the front yard(couldnt find the seed)
Hope that answers your poll *smile

lol.. I'm ashamed to admit, with most seeds I'm the same way. Shh! With flowers, anyways. Right now I'm not a whole lot experienced, so, I don't have a lot of knowledge to apply yet, nor a vast amount of growing space.
There *are* a few things I'm particular on as far as quality goes, but it depends on the particular plant.

Hi DanS, when I look for seeds, I generally start off by looking at catalogs and making a list of the beautiful plants that I see or veggies I am interested in starting. Then I narrow it down to new hybrids or cultivars that I cannot get through seed swaps. Then after that, the price per quantity of seeds is important to me as well. I would hate to buy 5 seeds for $2-3. IMHO.

Really depends.........sometimes I want a certain cultivar.....but lots of times just save my own or swap....and of course price is always important too...I love a bargain....don't we all.......so I have not voted........as it really is hard as alot comes into play.....

I buy most of my seeds from one particular mailorder company, plus one local seed store and from whatever appears on the racks locally in the grocery stores, hardware stores, etc. If I want something specific that I can't get at any of those places, I hunt it down on line.

I just buy what they have in the store that I'm in at the time, that looks good. I got all mine at Home Depot and Target this year.
