I guess that it depends on whether you want an annual or a perennial vine as to what you choose. The black eyed susan vines are pretty and flower all summer, the hydrangeas wouldn't give you as much of a show, but they will return year after year. |

I just love that plant.....my neighbour bought it last year, was not prepared for the climbing it was going to do (did have a very small trellis, and she grew it in a pot)......and it grew around her back entrance window........looked lovely!! |

Thank you all! Sweetpea...Yes, it gets virtually NO sun in that area, just some light at the end of the day. Ron.....That "Thunbergia alata 'Black Eye Susan Vine" sounds like what I will need, since it's a fast grower. Jade....Thanks for your idea, too! |

I like that Black Eyed Susan Vine too. I tried to grow one last year by seed. It came up very pretty was looking really healthy and all of a sudden it just started dying. It never did get blooms. But after reading this I guess I know what I did wrong, I had it in full sun. |

Climbing hydrangeas are pretty and will take the shade. There aren't many shade loving vines out there to chose from. |

I'm going to get myself one of those beautiful black wrought iron arches from a garden store that recently opened close to me. I would just love to place it at the entrance to my backyard, but that's a shady place. Do any of you have any ideas for a shady QUICK GROWING vine ? I have some verigated ivy on my deck, but it doesn't grow all that quick. And I want something different. Here's where I want to put it, between the corner of the house and the fence. I had the susan vine last year--I pulled and tugged it out amoungst a bunch of overgrown, twisted, big pile of mess on sale at the nursery at the end of July--it was one long little vine with a few leaves--anyway, I planted in the front yard and helped it up and old mailbox stand--it was so pitiful and I didnt give it much hope or attention for that matter--it wound up being the most beautiful flower that I had for the season--every morning I would go out and it would almost talk to me with its beauty--very easy to grow, produces great flowers as the pics. show--the only difference is that I had it in full sun--I did not even know what I had when I bought it--so I did not know where to plant it--but it did great there--I am definitely going to get one this year--going to try to grow one (a few) from seed on my own |
