I wouldn't do anything with it right now.Just leave it be. Next year in late winter/early spring , cut back your grasses and divide them then.Honestly though , the grasses grow so fast it may be best just to spread them out accordingly- if they get 4' wide , then go ahead and allow 4' between them. I didn't find your border to be overgrown though- I thought it looked lovely The daylilies you can divide now - it is the perfect time. Just pick a time though when it will be cloudy for a couple days.I find they transplant better if not in direct sun for a bit. |

Kentucky Lady, Glad you can relate to the reworking problem...I don't really want to have more than I can take care of though.....but I do want to prepare a no-dig garden for my veggies next year...I'm adding on to the two feet I have along side the shed....thats the fun of gardening I guess, and it keeps you active and in shape...when winter comes, I'll miss going outside and putzing around in the flower beds.... Pacifice Star, Thanks for the websight about grasses...I'm going over to look at it now..!! |

Kentucky Lady, Whitmore and Papa, Thankyou for all the wonderful advice!!!! I agree that I'm trying to grow too much stuff in one small area...I wish that area was larger, cuz it's such a pretty sunny location....I'm tempted to dig another garden on the opposite side of that location along the sidewalk to relocate some of the lillies and lavender...then I could add some other pretty perenniels there too....I've got some Heliposis I could divide in the backyard to put there too........I'm excited now!!! I'll go ahead and divide the lillies next week when it's going to be cloudy and rainy.....and then in the spring I will remove the Zebra Grass completley from that area and transplant them on the side of my house to camoflauge the electrical boxes that are visible from street....I will also divided and relocate some of my lavender........it needs plenty of sun....I'll also relocate some of my lamium.. Thanks again, my friends

Yup to what Papa says. You may be trying to grow too much in too small an area, especially with the grasses. Zebra grass is a spreader and can take over an area. By the way Papa, I'm in Manistee County now, but GR was my hometown, West Side, Catholic Central '62. |

Hello from G.R. Michigan area. Lilies can be moved anytime, they are almost impossible to kill. Lamium would do better in some parial shade. Grasses need to go next spring. They will get to big and tall to be near the walkway. Not to mention droop over some. Scratchy and can cut. Keep the rose and lavander. If you choose to move the lanander, do it next spring. You have enough grass to devide if you want to. Do you garden for birds? FR*EE newsletter at: http://www.backyardbirdingtips.com/ Ron Michigan Certified Nurseryman #1674 |
