List of black plants Here you go. Now I have looked at the list- the Black Knight buddleia is not black , it is a dark purple bloom. These are the ones I have seen and know to be black or extremely close to it. Black peony poppy Colocasia esculenta Black Magic Hollyhock 'The watchman' Also the Hellebores mentioned- now it does have a purple tint but is closer to black than purple. I have seen pics of the black grass as well as the Queen of the night tulip and the black calla /Zantedeschia. They look black to me. All of these are available through online sites - Wayside Gardens has quite a few. The black peony poppy you will have to purchase seed for.I know of no nurseries that sell the plant as poppies for the most part do not like to have their roots disturbed. I do have the Elder - Sambucus 'Black Beauty'.I just got it this year so still waiting for the black to occur. The Wine and Rose weigela has a dark burgundy foliage- kinda black tinted. The Physocarpus 'Diablo' I have seen pics of it in others gardens and it is a really dark foliage - again more burgundy purple than black. I don't know if this is listed but Eupatorium rugosum 'Chocolate' is also a dark foliage plant - again more towards the purple tint than black but very dark. Quite stunning I think - I have 3 This should get you started . |

Important thing to keep in mind- in order for the dark to pop at you, you need light mixed in- either lighter blooms or lighter foliage. There are many silver foliaged plants you can choose from that would go well. I love the Wine and Roses ,Rita, but right now it is lost in that bed. I plan on moving it out where it is more visible and have been considering placing it with the Weigela florida /variegated weigela that I have. It has bright green and dark green variegated foliage. I think the burgundy of the wine and roses would show better that way. I saw the Gold thread cypress yesterday - it is such a bright yellow green color- quite stunning. I bet it would look great mixed in with some Crimson pygmy barberry or other red/burgundy foliage. It is not good for a plantaholic to go to the greenhouse

Dig them up before a killing a frost. Allow to dry for a day or two out of direct sun light. Then I store mine in plastic tubs filled with the wood shaivings pet bedding. I mix 50/50 the cheap pine stuff and the fragrant cedar stuff. The cedar is more expensive (that is why I use the pine to stretch it) but it deteres rodents from snacking on your bulbs/tubers while in storage. |
