Excellent job then for a first year then zergas! Aside from the little quail bastiches I've had no real pest problem either and no rabbits around here at least! We're growing some sweet & early variety ... hope they're early as they got a late start! And no ... no beer in can ... that would be alchohol abuse. A friend of mine likes it when I use a can of beer as a size gauge. Need to get some of those little tiny promo beer cans to use, thus I would have huge melons! oh, sorry ladies.... ;-) Bottom line, I can't wait ... mouth is watering for some fresh out of the garden cantaloupe! |

Hey Zergas ... any tips for a first year growing cants type!??? Mine are getting there but had a bit of a rough go early on... Seems that quail LOVE little cantaloupe seedlings! Only two mounds out of four made it but they're going great guns now... any tips would be appreciated. Attachments: ![]() |

Thanks for the tips vegemm ... have the seed protection covered (pun intended)... The quail go them when they were just sprouts of 4 or 5 inches. Two of the mounds just had little stems left sticking up, the two other mounds had some damage but finally came out of it! Think I learned my lesson there to keep them covered/protected until they really get going! ;-) Suppose I could ask specifics ... Any easy way to tell when they are ripe? Do you put anything beneath the melons to keep the bottoms off the ground a bit? |

Zergas...those are beautiful...Looks great...I didn't plant any this year but did have some come up on there ouw...love it when you get an exta...only have had three rippen so far and maybe three more out there...but they are good Abhoth...yours are doing great also...I find if tou place a screen over the seeds until uo and going it helps to keep the birds from eating all the seeds....we got a bunch of old window screens from a yard sal...I plce a few 1x1 or 2x2 pices of boards and lay the screens on the over the seeds i lnat and have not lost seeds sence then...I have to do this wiht all my greens and cuke seeds also... |
