Here's my fuzzy leaved cuc.. ![]() Man, they are popping out all over. I've got to get my pickling setup ready. I planted a flat of Lemon Cucumbers, but they "died" in the March cold spell we had. I planted another flat and lost track of it when the seed packs flew. One or more of the cucs in my garden just might be them....I'll just have to wait a bit longer to see what the buds look like on ones that haven't started budding yet. My Mom really liked the Lemons... Greg I see I need to twist my tie to make it flat on the stem....ooops |

I'm hoping they are pickling. I didn't plant any green beans and my Sugar peas are gone, after a great harvest. I did try to plant Lemon Cucs, but again with my seed pack fiasco.... I have extra tall bamboo poles and can make a pretty good "fence" for them with the bamboo and string, like I used for my Sugar peas. I too am looking for pickling recipes. I just got the book "The Joy of Pickling" and plan on going through for cucs and a lot of other veggies. Thanks for all the help, Greg |

This is an easy recipe that I have gotten just in the last 3 or so years.......I love it cuz it is so easy.......and you can use any amount of pickles... Here goes.. Wash and slice pickles (I like the 4-5 inch size) in slices and place in a jar. I use 1/2 gallon and quarts usually..the recipe is for 1/2 gal.....so if you use quarts just halve the recipe. When jar is filled with pickles add on top of pickles..1 1/2 tsp pickling spice..2 Tblsp. canning salt..1 tsp. alum. and 2 cups of white vinegar.......then fill with cold HARD water. Cover and seal. Keep on cellar shellf for 4 weeks to a year. When you want some pickles..Drain them and just wash them very thoroughly.. Place slices in a big bowl .. Pour 3 cups of white sugar over pickles. Set on counter and stir every so often during the day until liquified. Keep in refegerator in covered jar or container. These keep for months and are delicious sweet pickles without the 21 or more day fussing around. My kind of pickle-making! Birdie |

Mama I am with you I like the pickling ones for salad or just slicing. My DH likes the big ones with lots of seeds. My first round of cukes didn't do anything. I replanted and these are looking a lot better. No cukes yet. My DH's aunt plants cukes for the fall. She will put them in the ground in a couple of weeks. We have a long growing period here. |
