Just curious... Has anyone on here tried propagating their koi or gold fish? I found a website that made it sound fairly simple and think just for the heck of it may try this year... I find my filters full of eggs in the spring as well as eggs on the lily pad leaves... It would be simple to harvest them according to the directions found at this site... My fish go nuts and stir things up for several weeks, usually in the mornings in the spring... I have aquariums in the house where I could keep the little ones until they were big enough not to end up being eaten... http://www.goldfishinfo.com/spawn.htm |

Here is what I'm going to try... I always have plenty of nylon replacement screen material (for doors and windows) on hand... Disney, my beloved Dalmatian sees to it that at least one screen gets torn up per year... It's her job.. I found that the nylon screen cut into leaf-like sections or strips will float and wave around the edge of the pond and can either be draped down from the outside, or held down with small rocks on the ledge that surrounds the inside of the pond... The fish spawn right there around the top edges, and so, I'm pretty sure that I can simply remove small sections of the material and follow the instructions on the website above... The eggs stick to absolutely anything and everything, so I know they will not only stick to the dark material, but will be easy to see... I have hardy lily pad plants, but would rather not have to harvest the leaves from them because of the shade they provide... Oh well... It will be fun to try... Attachments: ![]() |

Sure will... My wife said I don't need any more fish... My pond is over crowded now, which is true... but Honey, the small ones will have to live inside in the aquarium for at least a year... She wasn't impressed...

I winter the fish over right in the pond... If you look at the picture I just posted, you will see the heater (red circle) floating at one end... If it gets down below zero (F) the pond will freeze about 2/3 over, but they have done just great that way... |

Hello everyone, new to chat rooms. Ive had my water garden for two years and still working things out. Winter is slowly leaving (Im in upstate NY) my fish survived! Last year I brought them in the house but they grew alot! I didnt want to stress them (or myself) again by chasing them around with a net. I put a de-icer in, put up snow fence around the north and west side and laid a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood over the end with the de-icer to keep the wind off the pond. Kept the pumps and filter going. Maybe a week or two a thin sheet of ice started exept under the plywood. Glad I found this place. Ive got 4 comets and 5 koi in 1000gal. Was worried about overpopulation but after seeing pics, I can get some more!! |
