I was thinking of getting a pot of ornamental peppers to have in the house this winter. Has anyone had any? Are some better or nicer than others? Any problems with them?

Guess not too many people have had ornamental peppers. Zehrs is carrying a few ornamental peppers. One variety has mostly red peppers with some green ones on the plant that haven't ripened yet. Those would be perfect. Red and green peppers, Christmas colours, on one plant. But would they be the two colours by Christmas, or would all be red by then? If I keep picking them, will more fruit form, hence more green ones? Being indoor plants, they wouldn't be pollinated. Not sure how all that works with ornamental peppers.

Hi Blue Belle...I don't know how I missed this post earlier. I grow the annual Ornamental Peppers for late fall color and it had never occurred to me to try them indoors. Now that you have mentioned it, I think I'll give it a shot. Here is a link to some information about growing indoors:

Here are a couple of my baby plants...

Nice, Tulsa! Yeah, I've read the links, but I like to get advice from people on GG. On a lot of the sites people just post from books. I like people's experiences with things. That's why I ask here! And the answers are shorter, rather than having to syphon through pages of information on websites. I find after reading the websites, I have even more questions. Here we can post back and forth if we have questions! If you do grow one indoors, we'll have to compare notes over the winter as to how our indoor peppers are doing.

I notice on that website it says that you shouldn't eat the peppers. I've always heard that you can. Anyone? (See? More questions! )

Blue Belle, I had an ornamental pepper plant given to me last September, and it lived in my kitchen until about mid-february, when it suddenly becane infested with some tiny mites, succumbing very quickly. I suspect that it might have been a combination of not enough light, and maybe just a tad too much water! But really, I had no idea at the time what the poor thing needed, and life was too hectic to even look it up on the net--I was just counting my lucky stars that it lived as long as it did.

I will be trying another one this year, armed with more info. this time! I saw some at my local Zehr's too, some red, some orange, and some purplish ones....

Our Zehrs has them too, but only the red, Daisy. I'm holding off to see what the garden centre gets in. The purple sounds nice!

It IS pretty, almost a burgundy. Now that I am thinking about it, I think it was my garden centre that had the purples. My week has been a whirlwind of shopping and errands, I can't remember where I saw what!!!

I don't want to burst your bubble but don't let your kids touch the peppers then touch their eyes. You may have to watch the kitties too. Anybody else know more about this? I ended up throwing one out when my kids were young after my eldest did what I have just mentioned.

Heck, Sash--I ATE one! Nothing happened. These peppers are not hot....although I have had an experience with some teeny tiny red peppers my Italian neighbor gave us a few years ago...he warned us not to touch them without gloves lol....the warning came a little too late, as I had burned myself pretty good. WOW!

Glad your onboard Daisy. Mine probably was a different variety. I know it was an ornamental pepper but it was a looong time ago and I can't remember what kind.
