I've had this aloe plate for several years and it is just too big. I'm having trouble identifing the type of aloe plate it is online. This plate looks so much different from any of the aloes I see online and would be heart broken if I was to damage it. I would really like to split the plate, but don't have any idea as to where to start. Anyone out there with experience with aloes please help.

yes! purple is right!..You may want to consider gently cutting off some of the leaves, they can be placed in water untill they grow roots then planted again. the cut bits on the plant will weep with Aloe dont worry they will heal over. The cut off piece's can also be kept in a plastic bag or air tight container and kept in the fidge,to use on burns etc..
I'm sure you are aware of the wonders of Aloe!..You have a medicine cabinet right there in the pot!..is it time to repot it with a change of potting mix,it also wont do it any harm if you were to cut the stem down abit.
Aloe doesn't mind having its leaves removed as its purpose is for healing, when they are smaller the leaves can just be snaped off, with no harm done!. You have a lovely old Aloe there its nice you care for it. I hope we have helped.
