Closed loop, nothing leaves, nothing is brought in, no outside additives. All I put on my garden is compost and mulch. Do diversified plantings, no rows, let things self seed and come up where they will. Have a native woodland plants shade garden, a moon garden, a butterfly/hummingbird garden, veggie gardens, herb gardens, container gardens.
