Hi everyone

Just wondered if anyone knows what type of plant this is as my mum has it in her garden.

Its not something she planted and up until 2011 it wasn't there plus she had cleaned up the soil in the troff area so that she could plant here flowers.
She cleaned the area in mid 2009-2010 and no sign of this plant.

Now its grown very well and it looks nice but she is worried as to what it is and if it will be posionous, though if it isn't will it have fruit or actual flowers on?
As the flowers look strange? Yeah the don't seem to be open and when she looked at some broken branches she told me that they were hollow like banboo.

Sorry for the quality of the photos as it was taken on my camera phone.
In the last pic you can see a bumble bee ferriting about on what i think is a flower, there have been a lot of bees on the plant during the warm weather at the time of the photos.

If anyone can help it would be very thankful as my mum like i said is worried and if she can learn what it is then its likely to remain if its not dangerous.

Wishing you well (^_~)

Right off the bat, I'll say it's a Euphorbia, but which species...might take some time to figure out. It is somewhat like E. rigida. If it is a Euphorbia, it should leak sap if pierced or broken. The sap is toxic & care should be taken to wash it off immediately if any gets on skin. Keep away from eyes, mucous membranes, etc. I'm not sure if hollow stems fits. More research is necessary.

Back again...I believe it is Euphorbia lathyris, Caper Spurge, Paper Spurge or Gopher Spurge. I forgot to say that it IS in bloom in your pix. See link below, which shows plant parts in illustration. I have never seen this particular plant bloom, so wasn't quite sure about it.

Hello! I'm sorry I dont know the name of your plant, but we have it here and treat it as a weed, you may not have wanted to hear that,we find it growing along the beaches and sometimes in the garden,I have found it in my own garden from time to time and pull it out,but thats not to say that you have to. It remines me of a swan plant, but I dont think it is!.

Thanks, Purplepassion. You're SO right! There are over 2000 species in Euphorbia. I recognized the cyathia as Euphorbia, then saw the lower foliage in the pix that reminded me of Spurge & went from there. :P
