I bought these flowers for my garden and they have bloomed like they don't have other thing to do. I want to propagate them, but I don't know how to do it. I tried planting little needles the dry flowers drop, but it did not work for me. At the nursery they told me the flowers are called "San Diego", but when I look for this name in the internet I get nothing similar to them. Can you help? Thanks Attachments:    |

It's a marigold. They do reseed, but you have to let the seeds ripen. I dug up four the other day where I had thrown down a spent flower after deadheading. Those little seeds "needles" must have been ripe! (Oh, and you may not get the exact same flower from the seeds, so rooting would give you the exact plant.) You can root it, too. Try cutting some stems and putting them in water. I've had success with that. |

Hey Sergio !! Those flowers are...MARIGOLDS. Now that you know the name, you can research them. They're pretty stinky aren't they.  Pull off the dead flowers to keep 'em blooming and looking fresh.They just "pop" right off easily.Sorry Witt....we both musta been posting at about the same time. Your reply wasn't there when I started...HONEST !!

Thank you Witt and Purplepassion! The information you gave me will allow me to propagate these beautiful flowers (hopefully ;-)). Mines smell not too much, but their look is awsome! Purplepassion, stinky are the Cestrum Nocturnum (night-blooming jasmine) plants I show both of you in this reply. I bought the seeds from Amazon (They are subtropical, but I couldn't find them in Nicaragua) almost a year ago and I finally got them to bloom two or three weeks ago. I have eleven of them circling my house front yard and when the night comes their smell fills then air in a ten meters radio, its amazing! I hope the Greta Oto butterflies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greta_oto) will come and grow by the dozens now that I have the jasmines blossoming. July last year I found several of those butterflies in my garden and learned they love the jasmine. Thank you again, Witt and Purplepassion. I'll let you know if I get to propagate the Marigolds. Sergio you crack me up. Stinky means....BAD smell and I always thought Marigolds are stinky.  Now for the Jasmine....Fragrant would describe that smell/scent. Very NICE. I can't even imagine how heavenly that must be. You sure had good luck with the seeds. Sounds like a Jasmine hedge. W O W !!

My bad, Purplepassion!  . I know the meaning of stinky, but thought you were using it to express the Marigold's fragance was strong... Sometimes, in Spanish, we can do that in a coloquial fashion...But it seems my mistake caused something good: it made you laugh, so everything's good!!! By the way, the pictures were taken before I followed your advice of taking out the dried flowers a few weeks ago. Now the Marigolds have no dried flowers and they produce more flowers. Thank you. I just got Stevia and Ylang-Ylang seeds. The idea is to cultivate the Stevia and use it instead of regular cane sugar. I also will try to grow the ylang-ylang tree to decorate and aromatize a terrace in the back yard. I'll let you know how it goes with the Stevia and Ylang-Ylang project. Have a nice weekend!

Be careful with that YLANG YLANG Sergio.... I've read that it's considered an Aphrodisiac !  I like Patchouli myself....And No...I'm not an old HIPPY !!

Don't worry Purplepassion, I think I can handle the ylang-ylang! (LOL). I am waiting for three canes to blosom to show you the pictures and identify them. The one I have seen previously has on top something like a corn ear (but deep red colored) and of top of this a pure white big flower (similar to a lily). When I saw these flowers last year I said to myself: I want one of those! So I went and ask the owner for a cane and I have it now in my garden. Just waiting for the flower... There is another cane that first produces a bulb full with a fragant clear liquid. They tell me the bulb will become a flower. The drop you see in the picture appeared after I gently squeezed the bulb. The third one has big leaves similar to a banana tree and produces a multicolored flower they call here Parrot Beak. As soon as I have the flowers I will publish their pictures... Have a nice day. Attachments:  |
