We will be pouring a concrete driveway in front of our home very soon and I need help figuring out how to landscape the narrow strip that will exist between our home and the edge of the concrete.

I would like to create some sort of planting in the area on either side of my front steps, but that area will only be about 2 feet wide, so I won't have very much room. Not sure which perennials or dwarf shrubs would look nice. Also, I'm not much of a green thumb, so whatever I put there needs to be something that is fairly maintenance-free. I also have a rustic old water pump and/or wagon wheel that I would like to incorporate into the area in front of the window to the right of the steps. (see photos for layout)

I'll take all the advice I can get, because I don't know a thing about landscaping. Thanks!!

I think some tall ornamental grasses would lend themselves nicely to that space. Query 'ornamental grasses' on the net and choose some hardy perennial ones. They don't require much care. For the most part all you need to do is cut them back hard in the fall in order to avoid messy straw the following spring.

What type of soil do you have, it looks like sand? You may have to add a lot of organic matter and topsoil if it is sand for better plant health, unless you want a xeriscape (Cactus/succulent gardens are awesome, yes they can be done in the north!).
